The ebs and flows of this wild ride in the river of life are inviting so much movement and so much profound change inside and out.

For me, it feels like the current is so strong that in this moment there’s nothing left for me to do, but lean in, let go and see where life takes me. To flow into the spaces I’m meant to go to bring more life into the world. Even if it feels scary.

Despite doing this so many times already in life, it feels like in this moment, the pull is more dire and the consequences for resisting are far greater.

As I was saying to one of my teachers the other day, every decision, every movement right now feels like an existentially loaded choice. With much more tangible and hefty consequences for ourselves, others, and our greater world.

The illusory veil of safety and security is being fully lifted from the hyper individualist and capitalist ways of society in the US, and with it an increase in our awareness of the very real responsibility and role we each have in the future of our species and our planet.

As David Mitchell says in Cloud Atlas, “My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?”

Birth. Life. Death. Birth. Life. Death.

And on and on the circle spins.

The journey of life is not linear. It’s not a circle. It’s a spiral - swirling us along in the ebs and flows of life. When we return to a place in this swirling spiral that feels all too familiar, it can feel like we’ve never left. Like we are once again stuck.

Perhaps it’s a return to a predictable internal pattern of feeling or thinking we’re trying to change. Or maybe it’s a specific relational imprint we are needing to work through yet again. Some might say that it even feels like defeat or regression.

However, that is not the case. Our return to these “same” places always come with perspective renewed, with hearts changed, and with bodies grown - whether or not we want it, feel it, or perceive it. Change is always happening. It is one of the most constant and reliable forces in life.

Sometimes, we just need to build our awareness to orient and feel into these changes, however small or subtle. And after that, cultivate the energy and capacity needed to amplify and direct it further into the direction we want.

So the next time we visit that familiar point in this spiral, we can greet it as a touchstone, a checkpoint for us to reflect on our own evolution in this dance with life and make sure we’re still on track. Still in integrity with ourselves in the most life-giving way.

As long as we are in this body on this planet, there is no escaping our earthly responsibilities and duties while we are here.

And no I don’t mean the responsibilities and expectations socially forced onto us by society to profit the system and those ruled by the insatiable monsters of colonial greed, power, and wealth.

What would our world be like if we took all of the healing, transformation, and reconnection to ancestral earth based healing practices we’ve dived head first into and made it mean something beyond our own individual lives? To inspire us to create overdue systems of support, care, and help for ALL of our human communities, our plant and animal kin, for the earth for the waters for the winds for the sun?

This has been a year of more clearly understanding and more deeply reconnecting with my terrestrial responsibilities as a participant of this ecosystem, in this spiraling web we call life.

Responsibility to family, to my human kin, to my relationships with people. Responsibility to the animals and the plants I’m living amongst. Responsibility to our elemental ancestors - earth wind sun water. Responsibility to our ancestors and the generations yet to come. Responsibility to the gift and opportunity of being alive, of being human, of being in this body, of being here in this present moment across the time and space continuum.

It’s left me contemplating so often how I can show up better, in greater reciprocity, in curiosity to create more symbiosis, harmony, life affirming energy in the way I carry myself and walk through this world. It has meant truly looking deeply into the reflection I see of myself in the mirror - reflected back in all of my relations - and not shying away but really listening. Allowing myself to not turn away, not defend, not discount, not criticize, not shame, but just be with what is being communicated to me. Understanding the respective truths of what life is communicating to me through these moments. Taking in what I need to, owning my mistakes and my growing, to inspire me to grow and change beyond what I have been.

In contemplation of writing about our upcoming retreat, Back to the Roots in Lago Atitlan, Guatemaya from July 22nd to the 26th, I’ve really been sitting with the intention of going back to the roots and what that truly means.

For me, it means returning to where I come from - the land upon which I was born - the family in which I was born into - the ancestors that I come from, the human and the more than human ones. It means learning how to foster and steward deeper relationships of care, compassion, understanding and respect with these roots that are the bedrock and the foundation upon which me, the human being known as Arielle, is built upon.

How do I tend to and address the imbalances, the disharmonies that come with the territory of exploring where I come from, where we all come from?

When I’m talking about our roots, our families and our ancestors, I’m not just talking about humans. I’m talking about our original ancestors, our ancestors of Earth, Wind, Fire, Water. I’m talking about our ancestors of the animal Kingdom and the plants, the green nation, the ancestors that even if we don’t recognize or want to realize, are indebted to for our sustained and ongoing existence, survival and thriving on this planet.

How do I tend to and nurture my vessel, my mind and my spirit in a way that honors the symbiotic nature of the relationships that I share with all of the roots of where I come from?

I’m realizing more and more that the answer is not in the solutions posed to us by the most of mainstream mainstream or spiritual mainstream approaches. Or by mechanisms that attempt to create “success” through a palatable, socially or financially profitable image. Instead, it is through real, transparent introspection, self reflection, harmonization, and relationship building between us and all of the living beings past, present, future that are a part of our roots. For ourselves and for life.

This for me is what it means to go back to the roots, and this is the energy that I wish to invoke within our upcoming Back to the Roots retreat.

We are living though a period where the intentional imbalance of the feminine and masculine energies of nature inherent to all living beings is being starkly revealed within our species.

While this imbalance isn’t something new, it feels like we are in a pivotal moment where humans are collectively being pushed to reconcile this imbalance within and without.

While the building momentum around this harmonization feels clear and people of all identities are answering this call of reconciliation, there are many others digging in their heels.

And I get it.

Confronting this imbalance challenges the fabric of how people have come to understand themselves, others, and the world around them. It challenges the ways society for generations has taught us to perceive and act towards the masculine and feminine forces of nature. It challenges our own definition of being in integrity with the balance of these forces within ourselves and our lives.

Yes, it requires much of us.

And it is also an invitation, an initiation of sorts for us to take deeper self responsibility to pave a new more life affirming path forward, together, that truly honors and respects all aspects of the sacred dualities of life that steward life on this planet, human and more than human.

Relationship is a universally understood experience that transcends species.

It is a felt thing with between all animate forces and beings.

It is something that exists outside the social constructs of language, identity, belief, culture.

It is the very force that shapes and informs the creation of such things.

In its purest unadulterated expression, it activates a deep memory all living beings carry.

A remembrance of the oneness that connects and weaves through us all.

That allows us to experience life, to know ourselves more deeply through the reflection of another.

To birth a more expansive, a more care filled way of walking in the world.

To feel what it means in embodied way to be in right relationship with LIFE.
