You've probably heard of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which are stressful or traumatic experiences during childhood that can influence physical health, emotional development, relationships, and well-being across the lifespan.
But here's something equally important:
Adversity is not destiny.
While adverse experiences can increase the risk of certain health and mental health challenges, positive experiences can help build resilience and support healing. Think about what happens when someone begins to experience consistent emotional safety.
Safety makes it easier to build trust.
Trust creates opportunities for supportive relationships.
Supportive relationships can help strengthen emotional regulation.
Improved emotional regulation can make it easier to respond intentionally rather than react automatically.
And those healthier responses can create more safety and stability.
This is an example of a virtuous cycle, which is a reinforcing pattern in which positive changes support additional positive changes.
Healing doesn't erase what happened, but it can change what happens next.
Trauma-informed care should focus not only on understanding the impact of adversity, but also on creating the conditions that allow people to thrive.
