🎓 Learner Outcomes Series | Session 13

Exploring The Concept of Upper Aerodigestive Health: Delving into Structural Complexities and Functional Significance

Presented by Dr. Jeevanan Jahendran
🗓 Sunday, October 18, 2026
⏰ 3:00–4:00 PM | 1.0 Contact Hour
💻 This presentation will be delivered LIVE via Zoom

How do structure and function work together to influence breathing, sleep, and airway health?

Join Dr. Jeevanan Jahendran for an exploration of upper aerodigestive health as an integrated system. This session examines how structural anatomy, airway physiology, neuromuscular function, and breathing patterns interact—and how a systems-based, interdisciplinary approach can help clinicians better understand individual airway phenotypes and treatment needs.

Learner Outcomes:
✅ Understand the integrated concept of upper aerodigestive health and how structural and functional factors interact to influence breathing, sleep, and orofacial development.
✅ Identify key structural contributors to airway dysfunction across the lifespan of an individual
✅ Apply a multidimensional integrated systems-based approach to assessment and management which involves an interdisciplinary team
✅ Adapt myofunctional therapy strategies based on airway phenotype, including when therapy alone is insufficient without structural intervention.
✅ Assess patient suitability and limitations – finding a balance between structural correction, functional rehabilitation and a lifelong commitment to optimal health

Why does COM® Certification matter?

Training is an important first step. Certification goes one step further.

Did you know the IAOM has been certifying Orofacial Myologist for 55-years?

A Certified Orofacial Myologist® (COM®) has completed specific education, gained hands-on clinical experience, and demonstrated their knowledge and skillset outlined within our certification standard.

This includes passing our rigorous examination process and completing a clinical onsite in front of two independent Board Certified Orofacial Myologists. This is a true third-party certification and Board.

That means the COM® credential represents more than completing a course—it represents a defined certification process with standards that must be met.

For patients, families, and referring professionals, the COM® credential provides an added level of confidence when choosing an orofacial myologist.
Training teaches. Certification proves.®
