She came to me feeling like she had lost herself.

She was exhausted.
She wasn’t sleeping well.
Her mind felt foggy.
She was noticing changes in her body and just didn’t feel like herself anymore.

The hardest part?

She had already been told her labs were “normal.”

When we looked more closely, we found low ferritin, low vitamin D and B12, along with thyroid markers that needed to be considered in the context of her symptoms.

We started with the foundations.

We worked on her nutritional deficiencies, supported her thyroid health, and addressed lifestyle factors that could be affecting how she felt.

From there, we also looked more closely at her hormones and continued adjusting her plan based on her symptoms, labs, and response.

Over time, she started feeling more like herself again:
- Better energy
- Better sleep
- More manageable hormonal symptoms

This is why I believe in looking at the whole picture.

Sometimes it isn’t one single issue — it’s several contributing factors that need to be worked through together.

And sometimes, that deeper look is what helps everything start to make more sense.

What I value most in patient care is having the time to really understand the person in front of me.

My conventional medicine background gave me a strong clinical foundation. Functional medicine gave me a broader way to look at health — considering the whole person, the different factors that may be contributing to their concerns, and how those pieces may be connected.

Today, I use both.

My goal is to provide personalized, holistic care that looks for root causes and contributing factors, and create an individualized treatment plan focused on supporting each patient’s overall health and wellness.

That’s what TRUE Functional Medicine is built around.

Hi, I'm Renuka Patel, FNP, and I'm so glad you're here❤️

I've been a nurse since 2002 and a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner since 2008. Over the years, I've worked in family medicine, vascular medicine, and cardiology, spending more than 12 years in conventional medicine and chronic disease management.

That experience gave me a strong foundation in medications, labs, cardiovascular health, chronic conditions, and traditional medical care - and I still use it every day.

But over time, I wanted to practice a little differently.

I found myself asking a new question: What else might be connected to how a patient feels?

I wanted more time with my patients, to look at the whole picture, and to better understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and how everything connects.

That curiosity led me to functional medicine.

I pursued additional education through specialized courses, conferences, continuing education, and a functional medicine certificate program. I keep learning because there is always more to understand when it comes to helping people feel their best.

I believe health is about more than managing disease.

It's about having the energy to live your life.
Feeling comfortable in your body.
Having confidence in yourself.

As a mother of three, I know how easy it is to put yourself last while taking care of everyone else. My goal is to help you make yourself a priority too.

Welcome. I'm so glad you're here. 🤎

If you have Hashimoto’s and you’re thinking about pregnancy, your thyroid deserves attention before you see that positive test.

Thyroid hormones play an important role in pregnancy and fetal development, which is why thyroid health is something to discuss during preconception planning.

→ Know your thyroid status before pregnancy
→ Talk with your healthcare provider about monitoring
→ Make sure your thyroid care is appropriate for pregnancy

You don’t have to wait until pregnancy begins to start thinking about your thyroid.

If you have Hashimoto’s and are planning to become pregnant, bring it up with your healthcare provider early.

Save this if pregnancy is part of your future plans, and share it with someone who may need this reminder.

This Is the Supplement That Can Affect Your Thyroid Labs

This is the supplement you might be taking without realizing it can affect your thyroid labs.

Biotin, commonly found in hair, skin, and nail supplements, can interfere with certain thyroid blood tests and make your results appear falsely abnormal.

So before getting your thyroid tested, make sure your healthcare provider knows if you’re taking biotin.

Depending on the dose and the type of test, you may need to stop it for a short period before testing.

Don’t assume your supplements can’t affect your lab results.

I always want to remind my patients that Hashimoto’s management can involve more than just taking thyroid medication.

There are several pieces that can influence the bigger picture, including medication absorption, nutrient status, other autoimmune conditions, and changes in thyroid function over time.

And importantly, not every symptom is automatically caused by Hashimoto’s.

Fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, and weight changes can have many possible contributors. That’s why I prefer to look at the whole picture rather than assume every symptom comes back to the thyroid.

The goal isn’t to chase every symptom or add another supplement.

It’s to understand what may be contributing and make sure your care is appropriately monitored and individualized.

What part of Hashimoto’s management has been the most confusing for you?

Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism are closely related, but understanding the difference can change how you think about your thyroid health.

One important point: thyroid autoimmunity can be present before thyroid hormone levels are affected.

That means someone may have evidence of Hashimoto's even when routine thyroid testing still looks normal.

Why does that matter?

Because recognizing thyroid autoimmunity earlier can help guide monitoring and help us better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms — even before thyroid hormone levels are affected.

It's also a reminder that one thyroid number doesn't always tell the whole story.

Have you ever had your thyroid antibodies checked?

Hashimoto’s is often simplified to “your thyroid is low.”

But Hashimoto’s is actually an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly targets thyroid tissue.

This process is often gradual and can develop over months or even years, which is why some people may not notice changes right away.

Understanding the autoimmune side is an important first step in understanding Hashimoto’s.

Share this with someone who was told their thyroid is just “low.”

Did you know your sleep can affect more than your energy?

It can influence appetite, blood sugar, focus, mood, and how you feel throughout the day.

If this made you think of someone who needs to pay more attention to their sleep, share this with them.

You can sleep for 8 hours and still wake up feeling like you barely slept.

And the frustrating part? “Just sleep more” doesn’t always solve the problem.

Because there’s a difference between:

• Lying awake for hours
• Waking up around 2–3 AM
• Sleeping through the night but waking exhausted

Your body may be giving you different clues depending on the pattern.

So instead of only asking, “How many hours did I sleep?”

Start asking:

What is my sleep actually looking like?

That pattern can tell you much more about what may be going on underneath.

Save this if your sleep has felt “off” lately, and share it with someone who keeps saying, “I slept 8 hours, so why am I still exhausted?”
