The holidays aren’t always the problem.
Sometimes, you’re already exhausted before they even begin. šŸ‚

Skipping meals. Running on caffeine. Pushing through stress. Finally getting a moment to yourself at night… and wondering why you suddenly want to eat everything in the kitchen.

Sound familiar?

Before you blame your willpower, consider what your body has been asking for all day.

Maybe it’s nourishment. Maybe it’s rest. Maybe it’s five minutes without someone needing something from you. your willpower, consider what your body has been asking for all day.

ā€œI’m eating basically the same way. I’m exercising. Why does my body suddenly feel different?ā€ šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Okay, but…has your LIFE changed?

Because even if your habits haven’t changed much, maybe your stress load has.

More decisions. Less sleep. Different routines. More mental load. Less recovery. 🫠

And even good change—moving, traveling, a new job, kids growing up, exciting opportunities—still requires your body to adapt.

That matters.

Because stress can affect your hunger, sleep, cravings, blood sugar regulation, movement and recovery. Add the hormonal shifts of midlife, and your body may be adapting to changes inside you AND around you at the same damn time. 😳

So maybe your changing body isn’t an immediate invitation to eat less, exercise more and ā€œtighten things up.ā€

Maybe it needs a little more stability. ā¤ļø

This week on Elegantly Unhinged, we’re talking about why stress can change the way your body feels + 5 things that actually help when life feels anything but steady.

šŸ½ļø Oh-Sh*t-It’s-Dinner dinnersā€ØšŸš¶ā€ā™€ļø Collecting movement like loose changeā€Øā˜• Making your coffee work harderā€ØšŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø Tiny moments of actual recoveryā€ØšŸ§¦ And one cozy anchor your body can count on

Because when life asks more of you, your body may need you to ask a little less of it. ā¤ļø

You’re capable. Responsible. Dependable.

You anticipate what needs to happen, handle things before anyone asks and have probably uttered the words ā€œIt’s easier if I just do itā€ more times than you can count.

And maybe you’re really, really good at it.
But what is all that competence costing you? (And others?)

In this week’s Elegantly Unhinged, I’m joined by psychologist and executive coach Sarah Soulen Nielsen Emotive Coaching to talk about over-functioning—why so many capable women take on more than their fair share, why it can feel almost impossible to stop and what happens when we finally do.

Because carrying too much doesn’t just cost us time and energy. It can show up in our nervous systems, our sleep, our eating, our recovery and the entire metabolic environment in which we’re trying to care for our bodies.

And plot twist: our over-functioning can cost the people around us, too. šŸ‘€

So maybe the answer isn’t getting better at carrying it all.
Maybe it’s figuring out what was never ours to carry in the first place.

POV: You’re exhausted because everyone relies on you.

Also you: ā€œIt’s easier if I just do it.ā€

Ohhh, friend. We need to talk.

Tomorrow on Elegantly Unhinged Sarah Soulen Nielsen and I talk all about the sneaky reasons women overfunction and what it’s doing to your health and to those you care about.

When women notice their bodies changing, our first instinct is often:
Eat less.
Exercise more.
Fix it.

But if you’re already underslept, overwhelmed, under-recovered and carrying a massive stress load, creating MORE physiological stress in the name of health may not be the smartest place to start.

Stress doesn’t magically make energy balance irrelevant.

But it can change the conditions under which you’re trying to manage your health and body composition.
And context matters.

So instead of immediately asking: How do I make this body smaller?
Try asking: What does this body need from me right now?

I’m digging into the nutrition, metabolism and nervous-system science behind this in this week’s Elegantly Unhinged.

Two friends said almost the same thing to me recently.

They are both smart women. Successful women. Women who work hard, parent hard, take care of everyone around them and, from where I sit, seem incredibly put together.

Both are overwhelmed. Both feel disconnected from their bodies.

And underneath both conversations was some version of: ā€œI should be able to handle this better.ā€

And, damn, if that isn’t the midlife-woman experience.

We run ourselves ragged—and then feel ashamed when our bodies start showing evidence of the load.

The belly fat.
The exhaustion.
The insomnia.
The cravings.
The wine.
The gut that’s suddenly gone rogue.

Maybe the first question isn’t: What’s wrong with me?

Maybe it’s: How long have I been asking one human body to carry this much?

Episode 17 of Elegantly Unhinged is live:
A Few Inches, Part II: You Can’t Just Breathe Through It

We’re talking chronic stress, metabolism, gut health, body composition, midlife—and, most importantly, what we can actually DO to support ourselves when life isn’t magically going to become less stressful.

šŸŽ§ Listen wherever you get your podcasts.

And send this one to the woman you know who’s holding way too much and somehow still thinks she should be handling it better. ā¤ļø

šŸ“š Almost every major stage of life comes with instructions.

šŸ« School gives you a syllabus.ā€ØšŸ’¼ New jobs have onboarding.ā€ØšŸ¤° Pregnancy has What to Expect When You’re Expecting.ā€ØšŸ‘¶ New parenthood has approximately nine million books—plus strangers mysteriously eager to tell you what you’re doing wrong.

But perimenopause and menopause?

šŸ”„ You might get a pamphlet about hot flashes, a recommendation to carry a portable fan and a vague shrug suggesting this is simply what happens when women get older.

Meanwhile, your hormones, body composition, sleep and nervous system are undergoing one of the biggest curriculum changes of your adult life—and nobody handed you the reading list.

So when the habits that worked ten years ago stop working quite the same way, you assume you’re the problem.

But what if you are not failing a body you used to understand?

✨ What if your body has simply entered a new course—and nobody gave you the damn syllabus?

šŸŽ™ļø In Episode 16 of Elegantly Unhinged, we’re covering the midlife curriculum you should have received:
🧠 Nervous-system safetyā€ØšŸ’Ŗ Protein and muscleā€ØšŸ„— Fiber and steadier blood sugarā€ØšŸ˜“ Sleep and recoveryā€ØšŸ’› Permission to stop trying to become the valedictorian of menopause
