Yes, sexy I know AND I absolutely do this to check out how much ROOM I have to breathe via my nose!
Because breathing well takes adequate tongue rest posture AND healthy, open nasal passages.
Your nostrils — the little holes you see on the outside — are only the entrance. What I care about is what happens once air gets INSIDE the nose.
How much open space however is actually available for air to move through?
One of the structures I’m looking at here is the inferior turbinate — tissue along the side of the nasal cavity that helps warm, humidify, filter, and regulate the air we breathe.
And turbinates are SUPPOSED to change size. Your nose naturally cycles between one side being a little more congested while the other is more open. But when that tissue stays significantly swollen, it can start taking up valuable real estate and restrict nasal airflow.
Looking inside your own nose can give you clues (love clues). If you see a lot of tissue and very little dark/open space behind it — especially if it matches symptoms like chronic congestion, difficulty nasal breathing, snoring, or mouth breathing — it may be worth having an ENT take a closer look.
Note: You cannot diagnose turbinate hypertrophy or nasal obstruction just by staring up your own nose. That takes an ENT to evaluate what’s happening deeper inside and determine whether inflammation, turbinate enlargement, septal deviation, nasal valve issues, polyps, or something else is limiting airflow.
But as someone who has already undergone a septoplasty + turbinate reduction, I am VERY aware of maintaining my nasal health and hygiene.
Because we can work on tongue posture, swallowing, diaphragmatic breathing, and keeping the lips closed.
But we also have to make sure there is a VIABLE PATHWAY TO BREATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE.!
If your nose isn’t functioning well, your body has ONE other option: your mouth!
And chronic mouth breathing is not the breathing pattern I’m working toward.
