TThinking about bringing hair, nail clippings, or home-collected swabs for DNA testing? Call us before collecting. The wrong sample or packaging could lead to an unsuccessful processing attempt.

WHAT CAN BE USED?

• Cheek swabs are preferred. Use an approved DNA collection kit and follow its instructions.
• Hair requires lab approval. DDC recommends 7–10 hairs with attached roots/follicular material. Cut hair is not recommended.
• Nail clippings and other unusual samples need approval and specific collection instructions. Usable DNA is not guaranteed.

COLLECTION & PACKAGING

For cheek swabs:
• Hold the handle without touching the tip.
• Rub inside the cheeks as directed. Collect cheek cells—do not spit on swabs.
• Air-dry as instructed if overly wet.
• Place collected swabs in the paper sample envelope, not back in their plastic wrapper or directly in a plastic bag.

For approved hair or nail samples:
• Follow the instructions provided for your sample.
• Package dry samples in separate, clean paper envelopes.
• Keep each person’s samples and each sample type separate.
• Label with the person’s name, sample type, and collection date.
• Keep cool and dry. Avoid touching hair roots.

Avoid mixed, unidentified, wet, moldy, or contaminated samples. Do not assume hair from a brush is suitable. If you already collected a sample, call before bringing it.

CAN THESE SAMPLES BE USED IN COURT?

Home-collected samples brought to us are for non-legal, peace-of-mind testing only.

Legal testing must be arranged BEFORE collection. It requires an authorized collector, identity verification, consent, and documented chain of custody. Showing ID afterward does not make a home-collected sample legal.

ARE THERE EXTRA FEES?

Each unusual sample has a separate processing charge in addition to the relationship test. Hair plus nail clippings means two unusual-sample charges.

Fees are explained before submission. The processing attempt is non-refundable once performed, even if usable DNA cannot be recovered.

Call before collecting so we can explain your options and instructions.

You want a father added to—or removed from—a birth certificate. Is getting a DNA test the only step?

A DNA report does not automatically change a birth certificate.

In South Carolina, the required process depends on the circumstances, including whether a father is already listed and whether legal parentage has already been established.

Before paying for testing, ask Vital Records or your family-law attorney what documentation and testing procedure your situation requires.

We can explain the collection process and coordinate testing requirements with your attorney. We cannot decide which legal steps apply to your case.

General information only; not legal advice.

Not sure what to bring to your DNA appointment? A quick check before leaving home can help prevent delays.

• Bring your valid government-issued photo ID.
• If a child is testing, arrange for their parent or legal guardian to attend.
• Contact us before the appointment to confirm the child’s identification and any guardianship documents needed.
• If an attorney, court, or agency requested testing, share those instructions before your visit.

For cheek-swab appointments, follow our instruction to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for one hour before collection.

Missing an ID or unsure who can consent? Call before you come so we can review the requirements.

Your brother cannot participate in a DNA test, but there is a question about whether a child is biologically related to him.

His biological brother or sister may be able to help.

Aunt and uncle DNA testing—also called avuncular testing—evaluates the biological relationship between a child and a possible aunt or uncle.

Before collecting samples, we review the family relationships and confirm the testing plan with the laboratory. Tell us whether the possible aunt or uncle is your brother’s full sibling or half sibling. That information matters.

Contact us to discuss who is available for testing.

You grew up hearing that you share a father—but you still have questions, and he isn’t available for testing.

Sibling DNA testing may help evaluate whether two people are full siblings, half siblings, or unrelated.

This testing takes more planning than a direct parent-and-child test. The laboratory needs to know the relationship you’re trying to confirm and which parents are available to participate. Including a known mother can help clarify the results.

Results can sometimes be inconclusive. You don’t have to figure out which test to order on your own. Call us to discuss your testing options.

“He drinks a lot, so the DNA test might be wrong.”

Alcohol use does not change who someone is biologically related to or turn a biological parent into a non-parent on a relationship DNA test.

What does matter is collecting a usable sample. Food or drink residue in the mouth can affect sample quality and may mean another collection is needed.

That is why we ask you to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for one hour before your cheek-swab appointment.

Already had something to drink? Tell your collector before testing so we can guide you on the next step.

Your son is unavailable for DNA testing, but there are still questions about whether a child is biologically related to your family.

There may be another testing option.

Grandparent DNA testing compares a child’s DNA with one or both possible biological grandparents. Testing both grandparents, when possible, and including the child’s mother can help strengthen the results.

Before you book, tell us which relatives can participate. We can help determine the testing arrangement with the laboratory.
