At Bon Secours, we believe exceptional care means caring for the whole person and the people who matter most to them. Chaplain Andy recently demonstrated that in a way this family will never forget.
As one nomination shared, “There are moments in health care that remind us that caring for a patient means so much more than treating an illness.” When a father who was hospitalized at Bon Secours — St. Francis Downtown, was facing the heartbreaking reality that he would miss his daughter's wedding, Andy saw beyond the medical situation and recognized what was truly at stake for this family.
While the patient couldn't attend the wedding, Andy found a way to bring the wedding to him.
He helped arrange and officiate a special bedside ceremony, but as the nomination noted, “Andy did not simply show up to perform at the ceremony. He made it special.” He decorated the room, brought flowers and even made sure the patient had a shirt to wear. “He thought about the details that could easily have been overlooked but that made an enormous difference to a father who wanted to look and feel like a father attending his daughter’s wedding, not simply a patient lying in a hospital bed.”
For a little while, “an ICU room became entirely different. It became a place for a father and daughter to celebrate. It became a place for family, love, joy and memories.”
What makes this story even more remarkable is Andy's humility. According to the nomination, when someone suggested recognizing him for what he had done, “he quickly said that he did not need any recognition and was simply happy that everything had worked out.”
The nomination beautifully captures why this moment mattered so much: “He cared for the person behind the patient, and in doing so, he cared for an entire family during an incredibly difficult chapter of their lives.”
This is the kind of compassionate, whole-person care patients and families can expect at Bon Secours. As the nomination stated, “Long after this family has forgotten medications, procedures, room numbers and monitors, they will remember that when a father could not go to his daughter’s wedding, someone cared enough to bring a piece of her wedding to him.”
Thank you, Chaplain Andy, for embodying our mission and showing how kindness, compassion and extraordinary care can make all the difference.
