Life Help Senior Psychosocial Rehabilitation (SPSR), A New Day, in Greenville, MS, participated in an educational session focused on breast cancer awareness, emphasizing the importance of early detection, routine screenings, and understanding signs and symptoms. They also enjoyed painting pumpkins, an activity to encourage self-expression, social interaction, and fellowship.

Our PSR and SPSR programs are designed to support community functioning of people who have serious mental illnesses by providing opportunities to build life skills and develop coping skills while in an environment that promotes their recovery.

These educational, social, and ther**eutic activities take place in groups, providing opportunities to develop close bonds with other group members and their treatment team.

You may see PSR groups on outings around town and think they are a group of friends having a good time…because they are!

Great job on your pumpkins, A New Day! 🩷

Jaymar Nash, Life Help’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) and prevention manager, tells us about Red Ribbon Week, “the biggest annual prevention activity in the United States each year.”

Watch for our prevention specialists this week sharing the message to “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free” in communities all across the 16 counties served by Life Help.

Prevention specialists work with youth this week to increase awareness and share resources, continuing the outreach efforts and awareness campaigns by Red Ribbon week, which began as a “…grassroots, nonprofit organization in 1980 by a handful of concerned and determined parents who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention.” Today, their mission is …”to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.”

Life Help was thrilled to collaborate with Communicare MS to host a free Narcan training sponsored by Holmes Community College. Grenada County Sheriff, Garrett Hartley, requested training for the people of Grenada, an event where dozens of attendees learned how to recognize when someone may have overdosed on opiates and how to use Narcan to help reverse the overdose.

Narcan, or naloxone, is responsible for saving countless lives. Before widespread distribution efforts, take home kits were used by nearly 27,000 people by 2014 according to the CDC. Between 2020 and 2022 alone, emergency medical services personnel reported using naloxone with over 700,000 patients. At this time, layperson usage of naloxone grew by 40%.

Naloxone distribution has grown in recent years, and more and more laypeople, like those in Grenada, MS, last night, have now learned to use and carry their own Narcan kits. Overdose deaths have simultaneously decreased for the last three consecutive years. While they reached their peak in 2022, they began to decline in 2023 and continued to do so in 2024 and 2025.

Thank you to Kerri Wright, Communicare’s director of intensive services and CIT coordinator, and our own Andreaietta Edmonds, intensive services manager and CIT coordinator, for the training you provided, and to Holmes Community College for sponsoring. Thank you to Sheriff Garrett Hartley for requesting Narcan training and kits for the people of Grenada County and to all who attended last night.

You may also request a free kit provided by Mississippi State Department of Health at https://msdh.ms.gov/page/44,0,382,61.html

If you would like to request Narcan training for your county or organization, contact Andreaietta Edmonds at (662) 299-9354.

We at Life Help Community Mental Health Center are excited to talk to you about ADHD Awareness Month in October. ADHD affects many children and adults, and we now have a vast amount of research, resources, information, and treatments that are effective in positively impacting lives.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a brain-based disorder that affects executive functioning, like our abilities to organize, plan ahead, and remember & complete tasks. It involves increased levels of hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattentiveness, or a combination of those. Sometimes, people refer to having “ADD” when they do not have the hyperactive and impulsive symptoms.

Because executive functioning is impaired, areas of life that are important, like school, work, relationships with friends and family members are often negatively impacted, and that is when resources and support, often including professional assessment and treatment, are needed.

If you think your child may have ADHD, talk to their teacher, school counselor, or administrator. If you are an adult, below is a quick screener by Mental Health America. While it will not provide a diagnosis, it may help you decide if you want to talk to a mental health professional about further assessment:
https://screening.mhanational.org/screening-tools/adhd/

For more resources and information from Mental Health America:

NAMI is always a trusted resource for mental health information, and here you can find their ADHD fact sheet:

CHADD - Children & Adults with ADHD provides a wealth of information on ADHD topics affecting children, adults, and families.

If your child is newly diagnosed, it can be overwhelming to discover all the information available to you online, which is why we are bringing you trusted sources. Below at CHADD is a good starting point, then to ADHD Fact Sheets 👇

Adults, here’s a good place to start👇

According to Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence (MCADV), an average of 24 people per minute are victims of r**e, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. As they explain, domestic or intimate partner violence “can be physical, emotional, psychological, or financial, and it often occurs in cycles that can be difficult to recognize.”

MCADV provides more information at https://mcadv.org/what-is-domestic-violence/, where they give us descriptions of the following types of abuse:

• Willful Intimidation
• Financial Abuse
• Repetitive Patterns
• Threats
• Isolation

The coalition also offers other links to forms of abuse, red flags, and support for survivors.

Often, having the information alone is not sufficient for someone inside an abusive relationship to leave immediately. If you know someone who you believe is in an abusive relationship, consistent offers of support and safety with respect for boundaries around their decisions help communicate you are a safe person when they do decide to access available resources. Have these and other emergency numbers, like 988, ready for them when they may need it, and love with patience, knowing you can only control your decisions.

Survivors, we are so very proud of you, and we are thankful you are here today. When you think of your story, we hope you remember how you created a way to live through extraordinarily difficult times and how you managed to see your reality even when a different one was told to you by someone you trusted. That takes the kind of strength of mind and confidence that will help you build a life you want for yourselves.

If you are in an abusive relationship, we hope you access resources above or contact our 24/7 Emergency Hotline at 1-866-453-6216.

Know that support is waiting for you. You are not alone, and you are much stronger than you know 💜

Mississippi Support Network

Across Mississippi, certified domestic violence programs provide confidential advocacy, safety planning, shelter, counseling, transportation, legal support, and connections to other resources.

MCADV works statewide to strengthen these programs and help survivors reach support close to home. Visit mcadv.org/shelters or call 1-800-898-3234 to connect with assistance. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Life Help Community Mental Health Center’s Capps Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is located in Cleveland, MS. The Mississippi Department of Mental Health says, “The role of the Crisis Residential Units is to provide stabilization and treatment services to persons who are in psychiatric crisis, without the need for an inpatient admission to a state psychiatric hospital. CSUs offer voluntary and involuntary treatment services. In addition, after treatment an individual will already be connected with their local Community Mental Health Center.”

Capps CSU in Cleveland and Grenada CSU in Grenada, MS, support people experiencing a mental health crisis in the communities served by Life Help and beyond. It is ideal that a person be as close to their familiar support systems when experiencing a crisis. Part of healing is developing a community of support in their treatment setting, too.

Individual, group and recreational therapy are combined with supports from active treatment technicians. Psychiatric medication management is provided by a psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner and reinforced by registered nurses who provide 24/7 nursing care. People are met with admissions staff who are compassionate and knowledgeable about mental health crises, available resources, and how to help a person access a path to treatment and healing from the moment the first phone call is made. When discharging, a plan of care is created that includes continuing treatment in the person’s community and accessing other means of community services, if needed.

This month, Capps CSU celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pictured below are Mary Margret Kovac, director; Erica Cummings, nurse practitioner; Cornelius Head, att; Nikki Lipe, discharge specialist; Demetria T. Nolden, att and pa assistant; Deloris Johnson, RN; Shrarena Watts, att; Luvator Carson, admissions coordination; Angela Marquis, therapist; and Kierra Wilder, att.

Special thank you to Demetria T. Nolden, who consistently shares special news and celebrations that occur at Capps CSU.
