My liver doesn’t have joints. So why do they hurt?

Joint pain can happen for people with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), but that doesn’t mean AIH is always the cause. Learn what may be behind joint pain, what patterns to notice, and when to talk with your healthcare team.

🔬Join a Research Study About Diet and Fatigue in Autoimmune Hepatitis

Help researchers learn whether diet may affect fatigue and health in people living with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH).

Researchers at Indiana University are conducting a randomized crossover study comparing two carefully prepared study diets. The study will examine fatigue, quality of life, liver health, inflammation, nutrition, and the gut microbiome. Every participant will receive both study diets, in a randomly assigned order.

🍎Who may be eligible?

▪️Adults ages 18 to 80 with a confirmed diagnosis of AIH for more than 6 months
▪️People whose AIH treatment has been stable for at least 4 weeks
▪️People experiencing fatigue, based on a study screening questionnaire
▪️People able to receive or pick up weekly study food, store frozen food, and follow study instructions
▪️Additional eligibility requirements apply. The study team will complete screening to determine whether the study is a good fit.

🍎What does participation involve?

Participation is completely voluntary, may last up to 24 weeks, and includes:

🔹Two 5-week study-diet phases, with a washout period of up to 6 weeks between them
🔹Study food provided for both diet phases, with weekly pickup or delivery arrangements based on location
🔹Four in-person research visits, each lasting about 2 hours
🔹Blood draws, stool sample collection, a noninvasive FibroScan, body-composition measurements, health questionnaires, and a brief physical exam
🔹Short diet and activity records, daily food logs during diet phases, and weekly weight reports
🔹Fasting for 3 hours before scheduled research visits

🌟Interested in learning more?

To learn more, contact Kelsey Green at [email protected].

A study coordinator will provide additional information, explain the risks and potential benefits of participation, answer your questions, and guide you through the screening and enrollment process.

📋 Join the Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) Patient Registry

🔬 Help advance research in autoimmune hepatitis.

Researchers and patient advocates are working together to better understand
autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), improve quality of life, and support the development of future treatments. To help achieve these goals, we invite individuals with AIH to
participate in the AIH Patient Registry.

✅ Already enrolled?

If you are already participating in the AIH Patient Registry, please be sure to complete your annual AIH follow-up check-in when you receive the reminder email at the primary email address associated with your registry account.

Your yearly updates are one of the most valuable parts of the registry.

Following participants over time allows researchers to better understand how AIH changes throughout the course of the disease, how treatments perform in real-world settings, and which factors may influence long-term outcomes. Even if your health has remained stable, your continued participation provides critical information that helps advance AIH research.

❓What is the AIH Patient Registry?

The registry collects information from individuals living with AIH, including:
• Disease history and diagnosis
• Current and past treatments
• Symptoms and quality of life
• Experiences living with AIH

Information collected through the registry helps researchers better understand AIH and identify opportunities for future studies.

💻 What does participation involve?

Participation is entirely online and can be completed from home.

If you choose to participate:
• You will review and complete an electronic consent form.
• You will complete online questionnaires about your health and experiences with AIH.
• You will provide a saliva sample. We will mail you a collection kit, and you will return the sample using the prepaid shipping materials provided.
• You may be invited to complete follow-up surveys approximately once per year.

⚠️ What are the risks?

The risks of participation are minimal and primarily involve sharing health-related
information through secure online surveys.

🔒 Will my information be protected?

Yes. Information collected through the registry is stored securely and managed
according to established privacy and research standards.

Data shared with researchers will not contain information that directly identifies you.

📩 Interested in participating?

To learn more, contact: [email protected]

A study coordinator will provide additional information, answer your questions, and
guide you through the enrollment process.

👕 As a thank-you for participating, eligible participants who are US residents may receive a complimentary AIHA T-shirt.

💙 Your participation—both now and through annual follow-up—helps researchers better understand autoimmune hepatitis over time and supports the development of future treatments for the AIH community.
