What does it really take to be a sustainable herb company?

Alongside fellow businesses committed to caring for the planet, we traveled to Appalachia with the Sustainable Herbs Initiative to learn from the people and practices connected to the herbal products we value.

From cultivating medicinal plants to protecting forest biodiversity and supporting local communities, we were reminded that the future of herbalism depends on the choices we make today.

Responsible herbalism means looking beyond the plant itself: to the land where it grows, the people who care for it, and the communities whose knowledge and traditions have shaped our understanding of botanicals.

We’re grateful to Ann Armbrecht and the Sustainable Herbs Initiative for bringing together people who are asking these important questions and working toward a more thoughtful herbal industry. Thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge, work, and perspective along the way.

We return with a deeper appreciation for all that makes an herb what it is—and for the many hands and living systems that make herbalism possible.

Sometimes, the best discoveries happen when you’re not looking for them.

In this video, our founder, Ed Alstat, shares how an experiment to test the integrity of fresh herbs during transportation unexpectedly led to one of Eclectic Herb’s bestselling products.

The surprise came when our business manager tried the resulting freeze-dried stinging nettle capsules during allergy season - and discovered that they were phenomenally effective.

We’re excited to be part of the 50th Provender Alliance Conference! 🌿

Eclectic Herb owner Chris Alstat will be joined by clinical herbalist Mel Mutterspaugh to lead “Preserving Your Legacy and Staying Rooted to Your Purpose Through Challenge and Change.”

Drawing from Eclectic Herb’s more than 40-year history as an independent Oregon herbal company, Chris will share her perspective on carrying a legacy forward through seasons of profound change while staying rooted in the values and purpose at the heart of the business. Mel brings more than 26 years of experience as a clinical herbalist and her own experience building an herbal product business.

Together, they’ll invite attendees to reflect on what legacy means in their own work, reconnect with their purpose, and consider how we stay true to what matters most—even as life and business evolve.
