Can sleeping in contact lenses have positive or negative consequences?

The answer is yes. Negative consequences that is.

It maybe easier just to leave them in but in the long run it can lead to a lot of problems.

1. Block oxygen to getting to the cornea
2. Eyes are more vulnerable to infections
3. Contact lenses can become displaced
3. Contribute to dry eyes

Increased risk of:

1. Keratitis
2. Corneal ulcers
3. Corneal hypoxia

It’s best to always remove contacts while sleeping, even if it is just for a short nap. It’s the best way to prevent eye pain, redness and vision loss!

It’s an ant, it’s a fly, nevermind it’s a floater!

What exactly is a floater?

Floaters are caused by changes in the vitreous inside your eye and are often a normal part of aging but can be related to some traumas.

They can appear as dark spots, cobwebs, gnats and squiggly lines that move across your vision. Floaters are more prominent on sunnier days or bright lit backgrounds.

The vitreous inside your eyes liquifies and contracts. Scattered clumps of collagen fibers form within the vitreous and can cast tiny shadows on your retina; results the floaters that you see.

Floaters are common but can lead to tears and retinal detachments. It is always best to have a dilated eye exam when floaters are noticed and/or changed from your “normal” floaters

Astigmatism what it is and is not.

Astigmatism is not an eye disease.

So what is astigmatism to be exact?

It is a very common eye condition that causes distorted or blurry vision. Images will appear to be “out of focus”

It occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye has an irregular shape, leading to light bending differently as it enters the eye.

This can result in symptoms like headaches, eye strain, glare, starburst around lights and trouble seeing at night. Astigmatism can be diagnosed through an eye exam and is typically corrected with glasses and/or contact lenses.

A cataract is when your eye's natural lens becomes cloudy. Proteins in your lens break down and cause things to look blurry, hazy or less colorful.

What causes cataracts?
- Aging
- Other medical conditions
- Eye injuries and trauma
- Certain medications

Symptoms
- blurred vision
- Glare and halo around lights
- Difficulties with night driving
- Colors can be more dim
- Needing more light to read

When having cataract surgery there are different kind of implant lenses to improve vision and also limit the use of glasses.

Standard IOL: Only corrects distance vision. Glasses will be needed for up close and possibly distance depending on the amount of astigmatism.

Toric IOL: Corrects astigmatism to give sharp, crisp vision.

Multifocal IOL: Corrects distance and near. This IOL really limits the use of glasses.

There are many options for IOLs for cataract surgery; all options can be discussed with your physician to see which IOL you are a candidate for.

Let’s talk keratoconus.

What is keratoconus? The cornea thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape.

Vision can slowly worsen over time. Patients can depend more on glasses or scleral contact lenses. If left untreated keratoconus can lead to permanent vision loss.

Surgical option is Corneal Collagen Cross-linking.
This procedure is minimally invasive and is perform to prevent progression of corneal thinning.

The medication’s function is to strengthen and stiffen the cornea and is used with a specific UV light.

Dr. Bhasin specializes in treatment for keratoconus.

Virtual reality has emerged as a valuable tool in glaucoma care. Were you aware of this development?

This virtual reality headset is portable and lightweight. Now patients can sit comfortably for testing. This is a great option for our patients with neck and back issues that can't lean forward in a traditional visual field tester.

It's also fun!

Call 678-590-1238 to schedule an appointment to try it out yourself.
