Meet Susan Birkhead, DNS, MPH, RN, CNE, a longtime Nurses House supporter and one of the newest members of our Board of Directors.

For Susan, supporting Nurses House comes back to a simple belief: nurses should be there for one another.

“I think it is really important for nurses to help each other, because after all, if we can’t help ourselves, who else will?”

Susan has supported Nurses House as a donor for many years and has encouraged student nurse organizations to fundraise on behalf of nurses in need. Now, she is bringing that same commitment to her role on the Board.

Having spent her career in New York State’s Capital Region, where Nurses House is based, Susan has long been familiar with our mission, history, and the vision of our founder. Her motivation to serve is deeply personal: “I have been very fortunate in my life in many ways and I want to help those who may be struggling.”

We’re grateful to have Susan helping us continue a tradition of nurses supporting nurses.

When a nurse is facing a health crisis, time away from work shouldn’t have to mean choosing between recovery and financial stability.

For one single mom of two, support from Nurses House provided some much-needed relief while she recovered from surgery and faced several more weeks away from work.

Her gratitude and her hope to one day pay that kindness forward to another nurse, is a beautiful reminder of what this community is all about. 💙

Meet Meloi Policastro, a member of the Nurses House Board of Directors. 💙

For Meloi, serving on the Board is deeply personal. Over the course of her 38-year nursing journey, she has experienced both the rewards and challenges of a profession centered on caring for others.

She has also seen firsthand how often nurses put the needs of their patients and families before their own, even during times when they may need support themselves.

That understanding is what drew her to Nurses House.

“Nurses House represents that kind of support—a way for nurses to help other nurses during some of the most difficult times in their lives.”

For Meloi, Board service is a way to honor the profession that shaped her life, support those who dedicate themselves to caring for others, and remind nurses that they don’t have to face difficult times alone.

Nurses House mourns the loss of Elizabeth “Betty” Anne Mahoney, EdD, RN, past President and longtime supporter of our organization.

Betty served on the Nurses House Board of Directors for more than a decade, giving generously of her time, leadership, and dedication to our mission of supporting nurses in need. Her contributions to Nurses House were invaluable, and the impact of her service will continue to be felt for years to come.

Beyond her work with Nurses House, Betty devoted her life to nursing, education, and strengthening the profession she cared so deeply about.

We are profoundly grateful to have known and worked alongside Betty. She will be greatly missed by her friends, family, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched.

We extend our deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved her. May her legacy of compassion, service, and dedication continue to inspire us. 🤍

Nurses House provides short term grants to RNs who are unable to work because of a medical crisis, helping cover rent or mortgage payments, or eligible medical expenses when housing costs are not part of the need.
