Staying Well This Winter: Simple Immune Support Tips for 2026

Winter is here, and this year is expected to be a tougher-than-usual cold and flu season. The good news? A little preparation can go a long way. Supporting your immune system daily—and knowing what to reach for at the first hint of symptoms—may help you stay healthy all season long.



Here are some natural wellness basics we recommend to our Empire Health Foods community.



Daily Immune Support (All Winter Long)



Think of these as your everyday immune “foundation” during cold and flu season:

Vitamin D3
Vitamin C
Zinc (a low daily dose)
Magnesium
Probiotics (especially Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains)
A Vitamin B-Complex
Selenium (just a small amount)
Garlic or aged garlic extract
Ginger or turmeric
Medicinal mushrooms like Turkey Tail, Reishi, or Cordyceps


At the first sign you’re coming down with something e.g. if you notice a scratchy throat, runny nose, fatigue, chills, or just feel “off,” it’s time to be a little more proactive:

Vitamin C (you can temporarily increase to 1,000 mg or more per day)
Zinc
Elderberry
Echinacea
N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)
Quercetin
Honey—especially raw or Manuka
Ginger
Turmeric (look for a high-quality curcumin)


A Quick Word of Caution: More isn’t always better. Avoid long-term high doses of zinc, and be mindful with fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and E, which can build up in the body when overused.
