I’m super excited to have gotten into a figure painting class with Studio Escalier , that will involve traveling to France for a month in April. So I’ve been trying to brush up on my non-existent experience with oil paints. I’ve always been an acrylic painter myself, so this is truly a challenge to work with a new media that is somehow less and more forgiving simultaneously. Also, I don’t often draw from life much lately, most of it involves using a photo, a tracing, and guidelines. In tattooing, we don’t have room for portraits that aren’t perfect, so we start with a tracing. One small adjustment to your dear grandma’s chin can leave her looking more like your uncle Joe. I haven’t drawn or painted from life since art school, which was about 15 years ago. So you’re going to see me posting a lot of paintings in the next 6 months. This is from a photo of me, but without tracing, it’s a rough painting with a limited palette that will still need adjusting later, but it’s getting there. And I didn’t use a carbon stencil, so it’s a start. My hope is that the extra lessons in form, light, shadow, contrast, and composition will ultimately improve my artwork as a whole, and that will naturally spill over into my tattooing. Practice practice practice….. but also brushing up on my French skills.
