💙BENNETT’S UPDATE 💙
Bennett is back home! They had such a good trip all the way around! 🥹💙 We’ve been SUPER busy since getting home, so we’re finally getting a chance to sit down and share an update on everything going on with our boy!
First things first, his new KAFOs are PERFECT, and he is absolutely ROCKING them! 🥹💙 His doctors were so pleased with how he is doing, and we are so happy to have equipment that fits him just right and helps him continue working toward his goals!
While in South Carolina, his doctors also noticed that his right leg is slightly longer than his left. Because of this, we’ve added lifts to his shoes to help accommodate the difference. We’ve also been instructed to really focus on stretching him every day, especially before therapy, to help stretch and lengthen his left side and get his legs as close to even as possible.
We also have an appointment here in Louisiana to get him fitted for a Benik brace for his back, which will provide additional support while he is standing and working on his mobility. 💙
As of right now, Bennett will be heading back to South Carolina again in February to see his doctors and discuss surgery. We are currently talking about a left thumb release and, more than likely, foot surgery to release his toes during that trip. 🏥💙
There are more surgeries that may be needed down the road, including a right thumb release and a bone rotation surgery on his upper right arm, similar to what he has already had done on his other arm. His doctors are also keeping an eye on his hip, so we’ll continue doing everything we can at home to help with his positioning, stretching, standing, and overall progress.
And because no Bennett trip would be complete without a little unexpected adventure… 😂🤦🏻♀️
While they were in South Carolina, his mawmaws had to make a trip to the ER because his G-tube accidentally got pulled out! Of course, Momma (me 🙋🏻♀️) forgot to pack the extra G-tube supplies, so they didn’t have what they needed to put it back in. 🤦🏻♀️😂 Needless to say, an ER trip got added to their South Carolina adventure!
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! 🤣 They ALSO got locked out of their hotel room and had to sit and wait! Between the G-tube mishap, the ER visit, and getting locked out of the hotel, those mawmaws definitely earned themselves a vacation after this trip! 😂💀
SO. MUCH. FUN. 🤣🤣 Always an adventure with Bennett! You truly never know what’s going to happen next with this boy! 💙😂
💙 NOW, ON TO A LITTLE UPDATE ON THE NEUROLOGICAL SIDE OF THINGS. 💙
Last week, Bennett had a one-hour EEG, and we recently received the results from his doctor during a Zoom appointment. His doctor told us that some activity showed up on the EEG again. However, because Bennett was moving around quite a bit throughout the test, they aren’t 100% sure exactly what the activity was.
For now, she wants to continue him on his daily seizure medication since he hasn’t had any more episodes since his very first one. We are so thankful that he hasn’t had another major episode, but this is still something we’re trying to understand as we navigate this new part of his journey.
As of right now, Bennett officially has a new diagnosis of “seizures” added to his growing list of diagnoses. Since we don’t yet know exactly what type of seizures he may be having, that is the diagnosis we are working with for now.
One thing we’ve been a little concerned about is the possibility of absence seizures. Bennett will sometimes stare off into space for a few seconds, and he tends to do this pretty often. We don’t know for sure if these moments are seizures or simply him zoning out, so we’re keeping an eye on them and will continue discussing our concerns with his doctor. Of course, knowing Bennett, he could also just be ignoring us because he doesn’t feel like listening! 😂💙 That boy definitely has a mind of his own!
The good news is that we do not have to do the 48-hour EEG for now. We will follow up with his doctor in about a month to discuss everything and determine what the next steps will be.
It’s a lot to take in between his orthopedic needs, possible surgeries, equipment, therapy, and now navigating this new seizure diagnosis. Some days, it feels like we are constantly juggling appointments, waiting on answers, and trying to figure out what comes next. But we keep taking it one day at a time and trusting the amazing team of doctors who continue to help us navigate it all. 💙
Through it all, Bennett continues to amaze us. He works so hard, faces so many challenges, and still manages to bring so much happiness and light into the lives of everyone around him. We are beyond proud of this boy and will continue to fight for him, advocate for him, and give him every opportunity possible. 🥹💙!
One appointment at a time. One challenge at a time. One milestone at a time. One adventure at a time. We’ve got this, sweet boy. 💙
