Sixteen years ago, in the fall of 2010, I left everything I knew behind and moved to a new country, on a completely different continent.

I left what was familiar to me; not just the language, places, and the people, but the comfort of knowing how everyday life worked. I stepped into a life I would have to build from scratch.

Starting fresh as an immigrant really humbles you. You arrive carrying your past, yet no one knows any of it. Everything you were feels like it vanishes. In many ways, I felt like I had become nothing, even though I carried an entire life inside me.

And then, piece by piece, I began again… picking up the pieces of my life and making something new, while still carrying parts of my past with me.

Every time I look back at that version of myself, I feel pride. I think about what it took for her to leave, arrive, and to keep going without knowing how any of it would turn out.

I want to tell her how brave she was and still is.

That pride comes from tenderness and recognition. I can see now that I was too busy finding my way to recognize my courage back then.

I often think of the many others who have done the same; left home, crossed borders, and learned to belong somewhere new, while still missing where they came from.

This fall, I am honoring the woman I was sixteen years ago.

She couldn’t see the life ahead of her, but she took the first step, and kept going.

I am here because she did that.

Long before I moved to the United States, I was fascinated by Native American culture and people; from their traditions, to their ways of life, and the beauty of their connection to land and spirit.

After moving here, I had the honor of attending powwows and visiting ancient sites near Sedona, Arizona ,New York and NewMexico. Those experiences deepened my appreciation and reminded me how much I still have to learn about the many distinct Indigenous nations; each with its own history, traditions, and culture that still lives on.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I feel both grateful and heartbroken.

It is incredibly important to remember all that Indigenous people have endured and everything that has been taken from them. We should honor their pain, resilience, while at the same time their joy, as well as the traditions, cultures, and stories they continue to keep alive.

Indigenous history deserves to be remembered, their voices deserve to be elevated, and their people deserve to be celebrated; not just today, but every day.

With every step I take on this land, I want to honor the ancestral homeland I'm walking on, and that so much of this country was built by taking Indigenous lands.

I believe it's possible to both celebrate and mourn. We can be grateful for the privilege of calling this beautiful place home, while also acknowledging the profound loss Indigenous peoples have endured.

At the same time, we can honor the vibrant living cultures, traditions, and communities that continue to flourish.

It's important to note that gratitude must come with the responsibility to listen, learn, and support Indigenous communities, while also acknowledging them as the first peoples of this land, as people who are still here, and whose voices and futures matter.

May our respect continue beyond today, and may we carry that remembrance into how we live on this earth every day.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and with that, I want to share something personal. 💚

Mental health is part of my everyday life. I have struggled with PTSD, anxiety, and depression for years. I know how exhausting it can be to carry so much while continuing to show up not just for your own life, but for others too.

Therapy and medication have been important parts of my life; as well as Reiki, meditation, and a multitude of other daily practices that help me stay grounded.

That said, being a practitioner doesn’t mean I don’t struggle. I also need support.

Unfortunately, I've also seen the other side of that coin up close. A close family member I love dearly continues to struggle with his mental health but isn't willing to accept help.

Loving someone who is hurting and knowing you can’t make them accept support is incredibly painful.

You worry but remain hopeful, while continuing to have those tough conversations, even when it feels like your words aren't getting through.

Ultimately, you wish you could ease some of their suffering and make things simpler for them.

Families can offer support and keep the door open, but it's important to remember that we can't control our loved ones that might be struggling.

Maintaining healthy boundaries through supporting a loved one is so important.

I believe healing looks different for everyone, and there’s no single path that works for us all.

For me, making room for whatever helps us feel supported is so important, whether that's through professional mental healthcare like therapy or medication, or simply practices like Reiki, meditation, staying active, as well as maintaining connection with friends and family.

I believe many of these approaches can complement one another, helping us care for ourselves and one another, with compassion and an open heart.

There is no shame in needing medication or going to therapy. Nor is there shame in needing more support than you anticipated.

If you are struggling, or loving someone who is, my heart is with you. Your pain deserves to be heard. Your wellbeing matters. You don’t have to carry everything alone. 🤍

For me, October always brings a deeper sense of connection to those who came before us. As the days grow shorter and the earth settles into rest, I feel a quiet pull toward remembering, listening to, and reconnecting with my ancestral roots. 🍂🕯️

I believe our ancestors are always close. We have the ability to speak to them, honor them, and feel their presence in many ways. Whether it’s through a familiar recipe, a song, a dream, or the way our hands move just like our grandmother’s.

Through October and November I invite you to give that connection a little more attention as well. Consider lighting a candle, placing a photograph beside flowers, or preparing a meal they loved. Don’t forget to say their names, tell their stories, and allow remembrance to become a small, but loving, ritual.

Across many cultures and countries, curating a relationship with the dead is woven into everyday life. Love continues through prayers, offerings, tending graves, and keeping traditions alive. Those who have passed always have a place at the table and in the heart.

This season, take some time to notice the parts of yourself that may be connected to your ancestors; the way you relate to rest, your fears around having enough, the tendency to put everyone else first, or even grief that you’ve never found the words for. Make room for their courage, creativity, tenderness, and ability to find joy through hardship that they passed down to you.

We can honor our ancestors while still choosing to break their patterns that hurt us. And we can love them without taking on their burdens.

When we start to heal ourselves, we can also begin to let go of some of what we’ve carried from the people who came before us; and with that, we can make life a little lighter for ourselves and for those who come after us. We can also give ourselves the rest they lacked, the chance to say what they couldn’t, and the kindness they deserved.

May these months bring us closer to our roots, with room to grow in our own direction. 🤍
