Are 🌸BLOOM energy drinks healthy??

The other week a client who shall not be named haha mentioned that her stomach hurt after drinking a Bloom energy drink and wondered if that could be the culprit.

After an internal professional freakout realizing I am utterly failing in teaching people how to read labels (😫), I said YES that could be - it has sucralose in it! ⚠️

We bemoaned the fact that they had to spoil a perfectly good drink with this terrible artificial sweetener, and then she found a new energy drink at Target called "Benny."

After a careful assessment, the verdict is in - BENNY is better than BLOOM.😁 🙌 With 80 mg of naturally occurring caffeine from Yerba Mate tea and NO artificial ingredients, this drink not only offers energy but does so in a way that is calming as well (according to her).

Henceforth, my rhyme I leave you with:
✍️ BE CAREFUL out there and don't be fooled by a pretty pack (packaging!)
If it has SUCRALOSE, ASPARTAME, or ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, put it back!

(don't roll your eyes, I saw that! 😛)

Honestly, the more you look into this, the less "life-saving" they seem to be.

I'm also convinced that statins play a huge role in dementia. Cholesterol makes up 60% of your brain...🤷‍♀️ and most of what comprises plaque in arteries is a calcified deposit akin to lime, not cholesterol.

So nope, I won't be getting the flu shot this year....or any year...

As a lover of dance, Dancing With the Stars is my all-time favorite show. 🤩 💃🕺
As a nutritionist, I can't help but notice some things about the contestants, lol. 🧐
💐Giada De Laurentiis, paired with Alan Berstein, frequently appeared out of breath, complained about not having enough stamina, and struggled to put any energy into her performances, beautiful as they might have been. 😟
Combining that with her pale skin and tendency to be all over the place emotionally, I couldn't help but wonder if she had a major iron deficiency. 🫢
Why does this matter? I'm sharing because a lot of people think that an iron deficiency is easily corrected by just taking more iron. But I've found clinically it is not usually that simple.

Did you know you can be allergic to Iron, to Ferritin which transports iron, and even to your Red Blood Cells? There's also a hemoglobin DNA mutation that can occur that makes oxygen harder to transport. Any of these make replenishing iron levels *impossible* unless fixed at the root cause.

All of these are fixable however!! I have addressed many low iron cases by clearing these allergies. So if you or someone you know struggles with pale skin, cold extremities, persistent fatigue and low energy, tendency to be easily emotional -- and iron alone doesn't help -- send them to me. 😊

In the meantime, if you're not watching DWTS this fall, what are you doing with your life?!😅😜 📺 Amber, Ezra, and Maura are whom I'm rooting for this season 🤞.

💧 As you move toward replenished potassium levels and your pH is in the ideal range (7.4--7.6) you may want a more balanced electrolyte mixture in your water.🧂🍌
➡Liquid IV is a great option, and Costco has them on sale THROUGH October 18. Sugar free with nothing artificial, these have roughly an equal amount of sodium and potassium (500 & 370 mg), which is also good when you are working out or sweating a lot.

Honestly, I find that water is SO much more hydrating and tasty when it has electrolytes in it. My favorite mixture currently is 1/3 packet Liquid IV with a healthy splash of lemon juice (1-2 TBS) in a tall 40-oz Stanley cup. Sometimes a few oz of Body Armor as well. SO easy to drink 2 of these a day and voila - you've got your 80 oz of water intake! 🙌

P.s. People ask me - What about LMNT? It is clean, HOWEVER - it is 1000 mg of sodium and only 200 mg potassium. Unless you are SWEATING LIKE A HORSE every day or on a diuretic medication, it is just way too heavy on the sodium side and exacerbating the potassium deficiency most of us have.💁‍♀️

Are you getting a minimum of 70 grams of protein a day? If you are trying to lose weight or build strength in the gym, you need even more! The recommended amount of protein is .5 grams to 1 gram of protein daily PER POUND of body weight.

So if you are:

120 lbs = 60-120 g of protein daily.

160 lbs = 80-160 g of protein daily.

PROTEIN:

✔️Stimulates glucagon, the fat-burning hormone

✔️Satiates you so you don't crave sugar

✔️Repairs every cell and organ in your body so you are strong and healthy

✔️Builds hormones

✔️Creates hair, skin, and nails

✔️Enables your immune function

In short, I find that people without enough daily protein are WEAKER, easier fatigued, can't fight infections very well, and have slower metabolisms.

📖 STORY TIME:
I had a female 15-yr old client come to see me last year. She had had a cough that wouldn't go away for like 6 months, and found herself running out of breath/energy in soccer practice. She had also decided to go vegetarian a year or 2 earlier. Dear folks, she was getting in about 20-30 grams of protein daily. 🤯‼️ After my [professional] freak-out, she focused on eating more eggs, and incorporating protein shakes and protein bars. She STILL wanted to be vegetarian, however, she was able to overcome the infection and have a lot more energy after at LEAST getting in protein from SOMEwhere.

It does take some daily effort to make sure you are getting enough (WHY are carbs so abundantly available! 😩), but once you have a routine established, it's easier.

So! If you need help with your protein intake, try these veggie/plant protein shakes.

🚫 P.S. PLEASE read labels and be aware to avoid the following artificial sweeteners in protein shakes and bars:
✖️Sucralose
✖️Aspartame
✖️Acesulfame potassium
The Premier Protein and Fairlife shakes unfortunately have artificial sweeteners, and many protein bars at Costco do as well.

Sooooo….we’ve been watching Hell’s Kitchen as our dinner-time entertainment 🙃, and it’s been giving me inspiration on my food and plating skills 👩‍🍳 🍽.

If you want a nice light summer dessert featuring YUMMY IN-SEASON peaches or nectarines, this is it!

The Costco nectarines these past few weeks have been TO-DIE-FOR and I may or may not have been gorging myelf on them while they last 😬. (The peaches not so much…maybe various locations differ; just find whatever is slightly tender to touch and has a nice fruit SMELL. You know what I mean!)

For this dessert, I paired ripe nectarine slices with whipped cream and Crème Puffs (available at most grocery stores in the frozen section – not Costco though).

These Creme Puffs are one of the cleaner desserts you can buy (nothing artificial in it), and I feel fine after eating them. So yes, your nutritionist is endorsing these 😅 – still enjoy in moderation okay 😏.

Try it and let me know what you think!

🍅 It’s tomato season! And if you’ve been growing your own fresh basil (if not, why???), it’s the perfect time to make ALL THINGS CAPRESE. 🍅 🌱🧀

I think this is one of my favorite flavor combinations – basil, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella – and it can be utilized so many ways!

We spent last weekend at a friend’s house on the Severn River in MD (near the Potomac) and Isaac and I made this BEAUTIFUL brunch to start off Saturday. Everyone loved it!

Pictured:

🥚 Eggs with fresh mozz, basil, and tomatoes

🥞 King Arthur Buttermilk Pancake mix pancakes with organic maple syrup 🤤

🥝 Ripe Golden Kiwi

🥓 Costco low-sodium bacon

🍊 Fresh-Squeezed Orange juice (cold-pressed)

So grab some garden-grown tomatoes (grape tomatoes will do if necessary!), fresh basil (or storebought basil pesto), and fresh mozzarella, and let’s make these beautiful eggs. For the mozzarella, I used Costco’s Mozzarella slices sold in “logs” and cut them into small pieces.

Directions:
1️⃣ Whisk eggs with some milk (optional) and salt.
2️⃣ Scramble on low-medium heat until almost set.
3️⃣ Fold in chopped tomatoes, chopped fresh basil (or basil pesto), and chopped fresh mozzarella for another 1-2 minutes, then serve.
(Top with an extra basil sprig for extra presentation points. 😇)

Dig in and ENJOY THE FLAVOR OF SUMMER. 🌞 😎

🚨 Been hearing about Cyclospora on the news?

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that has recently been linked to contaminated lettuce from central Mexico. 🐛But here's the thing...it's far from the only microscopic parasite that can make people sick.

In my practice over the past 15 years, I've found that microscopic parasites and bacterial infections are among the most common underlying causes of what many people have been told is "IBS." When the underlying infection is addressed, those IBS symptoms often improve dramatically.

Interestingly, I've identified three (3!) cases of Cyclospora just last week, and all three responded well once addressed.

Why was I able to identify it so quickly?
✅ I use resonance testing with specialized vials that include microscopic parasites, making it much easier to detect when they may be involved (as opposed to using inconclusive stool samples that can take days to get results from).
✅ I commonly use black walnut tincture, which I have found to be highly effective against microscopic parasites and is generally well tolerated. (Conventional medicine often treats Cyclospora with prescription antibiotics.)

One client had such severe diarrhea that she went to the ER on Sunday. She was told they didn't have a way to test for Cyclospora there but that they "didn't think she had it." (*I'm sorry, cue giant eye roll.*) When she came to see me, my testing indicated it was indeed Cyclospora, and we were able to begin addressing it properly that same day. She started feeling better very quickly.

💡 Takeaway: If you've been struggling with persistent diarrhea or have been diagnosed with IBS that just won't improve, it may be worth considering whether an underlying infection—whether a parasite or bacteria—could be contributing to your symptoms.

And one helpful thing to keep in mind: Black walnut tincture is inexpensive, readily available (including on Amazon), and in my experience works well against a broad range of microscopic parasites. The 1-oz alcohol-free option by Nature's Answer is nice.

Also! PLEASE continue to eat fruits and vegetables🍒🍇🥕🍅 - if you want to avoid plain lettuce for a bit that is fine - but y'all are scaring me telling me you're avoiding ALL fresh fruit and vegetables.😅😅🫨

Love getting happy result texts like this! ❤️

This client has been at maintenance level for a few years now (energy is so much better, doesn't have her gluten allergy anymore, hormones are stable, etc) and said that a few weeks before this last appt, she developed "gurgly insides" and some loose stool. I found that for some reason an allergy to her small intestine tissue got triggered 2.5 wks prior, causing these "unhappy insides," so it was an easy fix to clear that and reset everything. 🛠

A good reminder that even at maintenance, weird/random things can happen anytime (because life), but I am here for you to get it back on track! 😅🥳

🍲 EATING OUT - Best/Healthiest Restaurants in Harrisonburg🍴🥑🥩

I don't know about you but the healthier I've gotten, the more annoying it is to eat out at a restaurant and then feel like absolute poo afterward--foggy-headed, tired, thirsty, and bloated.

I believe the main reason for this is because of how many restaurants (i.e. 99% of them) use toxic omega-6 seed oils for cooking and frying 🫕. Avoiding fried foods on the menu is a good start, but sometimes you just want to eat someone else's cooking without worrying whether you're going to feel okay afterward 😅😅😩.

In Harrisonburg, we do have a few options of real, whole-foods cooking without seed oils:

🟠 BREAKFAST/BRUNCH
◇ Magpie Diner (SERIOUSLY amazing 👏)
◇ Broad Porch Coffee Co (surprising new gem)
◇ Friendly City Food Co-op Sunday Brunch Bar 🌞 or, pre-wrapped sausage and egg biscuit for easy pickup during the week

🟢 LUNCH/DINNER FAST FOOD
◇ Friendly City Food Co-op hot food bar open between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. M-F (my fave - menus curated by real chefs and always a little dessert option 😉)
◇ A Bowl of Good
◇ Tropical Smoothie Cafe
◇ Chipotle (not necessarily seed-oil-free but still better than most)

🟣 LUNCH/DINNER SIT-DOWN
◇ Local Chop and Grill (their duck-fat fries are not to be missed! 😍)
◇ Ridge Room (5th floor of the Hyatt Place)
◇ Rocktown Kitchen
◇ Ilyria Mediterranean restaurant ($$ but nice for a special occasion)

I have heard about 🌿 Roots Natural Kitchen being open, but I looked online and they use canola oil so while they are definitely a much better option, they are not completely seed-oil-free.

And that is it! What restaurants have you found to use high-quality ingredients you feel good after ingesting? Please share as I would love to know more options.😅🙏

(I know I know, some of you are sad that Chick-fil-A 🐔 did not make the list 😂😂🤣)
