💕 Breast Cancer Is More Common Than You Think!

Did you know that 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer during their lifetime?

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 321,910 women are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2026.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Louisiana, and our state’s breast cancer death rate remains higher than the national average.

🎀 Why Is This Important in Rural Louisiana?

Here in Catahoula Parish and our surrounding communities, many women face challenges that can delay routine mammograms:

💕 Long distances to screening facilities

💕 Limited transportation options

💕 Financial and insurance concerns

💕 Busy schedules caring for children, grandchildren, and family

💕 Lack of noticeable symptoms

Breast cancer does not discriminate based on where you live, and living in a small town should never mean missing an opportunity for early detection!

🩺 Why Are Mammograms So Important?

✅ Mammograms can detect breast cancer before a lump can be felt.

✅ Finding breast cancer early often means more treatment options and better outcomes.

✅ Women ages 40–74 at average risk should receive screening mammograms every 2 years under USPSTF guidelines. Annual screening may also be appropriate based on individual circumstances.

✅ Women with a strong family history or other high-risk factors may need earlier or additional screening.

ADHD is more than just having trouble sitting still or paying attention. It can affect focus, organization, impulse control, time management, and everyday activities.

This month, Ramirez Healthcare is reminding the women in our community that early detection matters.

Breast cancer may not always cause symptoms in its early stages, which is why staying current with your recommended screenings is so important.

💗 Know what is normal for your body
💗 Report any new lump, swelling, skin changes, ni**le changes, or unusual discharge
💗 Keep up with your clinical breast exams and mammograms as recommended
💗 Talk with your healthcare provider about your personal and family history

🌾 HARVEST SEASON IS HERE — PROTECT YOUR LUNGS 🌾

In the South, harvest time can mean more dust, pollen, mold, and crop particles in the air. For some people, that can trigger coughing, wheezing, sinus irritation, or asthma and COPD flare-ups.

Watch for:
• Persistent cough
• Chest tightness
• Wheezing
• Shortness of breath
• Burning or watery eyes
• Sinus pressure or congestion

🚜 If you work around fields, tractors, grain, or heavy dust:
✅ Wear a well-fitting mask or respirator when exposure is high
✅ Shower and change clothes after working outdoors
✅ Keep rescue inhalers available if prescribed
✅ Stay hydrated
✅ Avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure on especially dusty days

⚠️ Seek medical care if breathing becomes difficult, wheezing is getting worse, you develop chest pain, or symptoms are not improving.

Don’t brush off breathing problems as “just harvest dust.” Sometimes an evaluation is needed to rule out infection, asthma flare, bronchitis, or other lung problems.

💓 ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AWARENESS

Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, is an irregular heartbeat that can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart failure.

Some people with AFib have no symptoms at all. Others may notice:

❤️ A racing, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat
😮‍💨 Shortness of breath
😴 Unusual fatigue
😵 Dizziness or lightheadedness
💢 Chest discomfort

Risk can increase with conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, and advancing age.

Knowing your pulse and keeping up with routine checkups can help identify problems early. If you notice a new irregular heartbeat or repeated episodes of palpitations, talk with your healthcare provider.

🚨 Call 911 for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or signs of stroke such as facial drooping, arm weakness, or difficulty speaking.

🍂 FALLS PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK 🍂
You don’t have to prevent falls alone — use the resources in your community.

If you or an older loved one is worried about falling, several community services may be able to help:

🏡 Council on Aging & senior programs — assistance with local resources, transportation, meals and senior support services
💊 Your pharmacist — medication reviews to identify medicines that may cause dizziness, weakness or drowsiness
🩺 Your healthcare provider — blood pressure checks, vision concerns, balance problems and fall-risk assessments
💪 Physical & occupational therapy — help with strength, balance, walking safety and recommendations for safer movement at home
🚐 Transportation services — safer transportation to medical visits when driving or walking is difficult
🏠 Home health services — when medically appropriate, home-based care may help patients who have mobility or safety concerns
👓 Vision and hearing services — changes in vision or hearing can affect balance and increase fall risk
🤝 Family, neighbors & caregivers — sometimes something as simple as helping remove clutter, improve lighting or install grab bars can make a big difference.

If you’ve had a fall, feel unsteady, or are afraid of falling, tell your healthcare provider. Falling is not something you have to simply accept as part of getting older.

🌾🫁 HARVEST DUST OR BRONCHITIS?

It’s harvest season, and coughing is common—but not every cough is just from the dust!

🌾 HARVEST DUST IRRITATION MAY CAUSE:
• Dry or scratchy throat
• Sneezing and nasal congestion
• Itchy or watery eyes
• Dry cough
• Wheezing, especially with asthma
• Symptoms that worsen around fields, grain, or heavy dust

🫁 BRONCHITIS MAY CAUSE:
• Persistent cough, sometimes with mucus
• Chest soreness or discomfort from coughing
• Fatigue
• Wheezing
• Mild fever or chills
• Symptoms that continue even after leaving the dusty environment

💡 Keep in mind: Symptoms can overlap, and harvest dust can aggravate existing asthma or other respiratory conditions. Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a virus, so antibiotics are not always needed.

⚠️ GET CHECKED if your cough is persistent, worsening, associated with fever, or you’re having increased wheezing or shortness of breath.

🚨 Severe trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, or blue/gray lips or skin requires emergency care.

✅ Helpful tips:
Wear a mask when working around heavy dust, shower and change clothes after outdoor exposure, keep windows closed when possible, and talk with your healthcare provider about allergy treatment if symptoms are interfering with your day.

⚠️ Seek medical care if you develop significant wheezing, shortness of breath, fever, severe sinus pain, or symptoms that continue to worsen.
