Have you ever wondered what’s the point of therapy? One way I was able to explain it this year was like this: while in therapy, your world should get bigger and bigger over time, not smaller. Childhood wounds that have held you back in life should begin to heal. People and places that were triggering for you should start to feel less daunting. Self confidence can grow, self esteem can grow. You can learn how to manage big emotions in a healthier way. People who genuinely love you and feel safe to you can become closer where you might’ve held them at a distance. You can start to create boundaries with people who are toxic and unsafe. You begin to realize what you really love and who you really are, not just what expectations were put on you. All of these things can open up new opportunities and experiences for you. If you feel stuck, if your world keeps getting smaller and the same patterns of behavior are there after many sessions, you might not be getting the therapy you need. That doesn’t always mean it’s a bad therapist, might not be the right fit for you though. As always, if you have questions about the therapy process, please message and I’ll be happy to help answer them!
