Over the past two weeks, our Pre-ETS students from Hazard, Leslie, and Perry Central High Schools have been learning how to make mug cakes! 🧁

We started by talking about food safety and the importance of following safe practices in the kitchen. Then, the students put what they learned into action by making their own individual mug cakes! Along the way, they practiced following recipes, measuring ingredients, and building everyday independent living skills.

It was a fun, hands-on break from the usual learning while still building important life skills! 😊

Big Ideas and Creative Minds at ACAT!

Yesterday, the entire ACAT team from both sites, along with our director, had the pleasure of working with our CARAT-TOP students from Perry County Central High School! ❤️

Our students spent time in the ACAT makerspace diving deeper into their toy adaptation projects. They had the opportunity to explore and use a variety of makerspace equipment and materials, experiment with different ideas, and determine what would and wouldn’t work as they bring their creative visions to life. 🛠️

A huge thank-you to everyone who worked with and supported our student groups yesterday! We would especially like to recognize our DPT student, Lilly Blanton, who has done a wonderful job taking a group under her wing and providing guidance and assistance wherever needed. We appreciate your dedication and support! 👏

We are so proud of our students’ creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, and we can’t wait to see their finished products! Stay tuned for more updates as these amazing projects continue to take shape! 🎉

We are incredibly excited to share the results of a true community collaboration between the fine folks at UK St. Claire, Hazard ACAT team, Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States: Covington, KY, 4-H, and Rowan County Emergency Services !

After meeting with EMS Director Levi Hanshaw and Assistant Director Cindy Glover, we began developing Sensory and Communication Kits to support autistic individuals, nonspeaking individuals, and others who may become overwhelmed or have difficulty communicating during an emergency.

Director Hanshaw was very supportive of the project. He personally picked up the completed sensory bags and immediately placed them inside the ambulance units so they would be available when responders need them.

These kits came together because so many wonderful people were willing to help:

💙 Sister Judy, Mindy, and the Sisters of Notre Dame provided the comfort blankets.

💙 Holbrook’s Embroidery added our patches to the blankets and gave them a special finishing touch.

💙 Peggy, Amanda, Jayme, and the ladies from the Rowan County Cooperative Extension Office helped us assemble the kits during our visit.

💙 Director Levi Hanshaw, Assistant Director Cindy Glover, and Rowan County EMS supported the project and placed the kits directly into service.

💙 Patrick Kitzman, Keisha Wells, Cody Hecker, and our entire ACAT team helped turn the idea into something real.

This is what community collaboration is all about—recognizing a need, bringing people together, and creating something that can directly help our neighbors during a stressful or frightening emergency.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time, materials, ideas, and support. We truly could not have done this without all of you!

🚨🚨If your EMS department, first-responder agency, or community organization is interested in developing Sensory and Communication Kits, please message us or contact the ACAT team. We would love to share what we have learned and explore opportunities to collaborate!

ACAT is out and about in our communities!

Our ACAT team at both sites had a busy day connecting with our community partners and having some fall fun! 🧡

📍Hazard: We teamed up with the Perry County Senior Center and some of our Perry County Central High School Pre-ETS students for a fun, fall-themed activity! The students and senior citizens put their creativity and skills to work by building catapults and launching marshmallow pumpkins into cups. 🎃 Each team competed to see who could land the most pumpkins in their cups, with the winning team taking home a special 3D-printed prize!

📍Morehead: Our team collaborated with Rowan County Schools at the Partners in Possibilities event, connecting with others and continuing to build meaningful community partnerships.

We are grateful for opportunities like these to engage with our communities, support our students, and demonstrate how creativity, collaboration, and assistive technology can bring people together! 💙

It’s been a busy start to the week at ACAT Hazard!

Yesterday, we met with our CARAT-TOP students as they began laying out their plans for the toys and games their groups selected to adapt. We’re excited to see their creativity and ideas take shape! 🧸🛠️

Today, we had the opportunity to bring some of our Perry County Central High School students, most of whom also participate in our Pre-ETS program, along with us to the Perry County Senior Center. The students enjoyed spending time with the seniors while participating in a fun fall activity making pumpkin suncatchers!🎃☀️

At ACAT, we love creating opportunities that bring together students, community members, and individuals of all abilities. These experiences provide meaningful connections, hands-on learning, and plenty of fun along the way!

We would like to give a huge shoutout to the students for their awesome volunteer skills they showed today!

Another great day of learning, creating, and connecting at ACAT!

Today’s theme at ACAT: STUDENTS!

While our Hazard site was busy engaging with high school students (see our previous post), our Morehead site welcomed Physician Assistant (PA) students from the University of Kentucky’s Morehead-based program!

The students received a tour of ACAT Morehead, learned more about our services and resources, and participated in a discussion about ways they can get involved with ACAT. We also had the opportunity to answer their questions.

We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with these future healthcare professionals and look forward to building a strong partnership moving forward!

Today, our Perry County Central High School Pre-ETS students took a trip to the Disability Resource Center in Hazard, Kentucky! 🎓✨

During the visit, students learned about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and worked on key goal-setting skills—breaking down big ambitions for the school year into actionable weekly and daily targets. 🎯

To wrap up a great visit, everyone got creative with a fun fall activity before heading back to school! 🎨🍂

Huge thanks to the Disability Resource Center for hosting our students and supporting their growth! 👏
