Did you know repeated IVs can cause scar tissue in your veins? Every IV placement causes a small amount of trauma to the vein. Over time, repeated irritation can lead to scar tissue, making veins harder, less flexible, and more difficult to access. Good IV technique isn't just about getting access today. It's about protecting your patient's veins for the future.
Here's what matters: Vein assessment, technique, and skill. A skilled IV nurse doesn't just look for a vein they can hit. They assess vein health and minimize unnecessary trauma.
How can IV nurses help prevent this?
💉 Use appropriate catheter sizes according the patient's unique anatomy.
🩺 Rotate insertion sites to avoid repeatedly puncturing the same area.
🔍 Use ultrasound guidance when appropriate to minimize unsuccessful attempts.
💧 Ensure proper dilution and infusion rates to reduce vein irritation.
✔️ Never ignore burning, pain, or discomfort during an infusion.
✅️ Place the IV successfully the first time.
