🚨 HAPPENING SOON 🚨

🎙️ COMING SOON: Moms of Special Born Angels, The Podcast 👼💚

Parents, let your voice be heard.

This is a space for the moms, dads and caregivers raising children with special needs. We carry a lot, and too often we carry it quietly.

On this podcast, we're going to talk about:

💚 Disability rights: knowing what our children are entitled to and how to advocate for them, at school, in healthcare and in the community.
🏠 Housing: the barriers families face finding safe, accessible and affordable homes.
⚖️ CPS: how to know your rights, how to protect your family, and how to handle the fear and judgment parents of special needs children often face when CPS gets involved.
🤝 Stigma: the stares, the assumptions and the judgment our communities face, and how we change the story.
🫶 Lack of support: the long waitlists, the services that are hard to find or get, and the exhaustion of doing so much of this alone.
🔋Parent burnout: the mental, emotional and physical toll of caregiving, and why taking care of yourself isn't selfish.
🌿 Respite services: how to find and get breaks and relief care, so you can rest and recharge.
🧭 Self-direction: how families can take control of their loved one's services and choose the supports that work for them.
👩‍👧 CDPAP: how the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program works in New York and how families can use it.
✨ Real support: resources, honest conversations and the stories behind the strength.

Our children are not a burden. They are gifts, and they deserve to be seen, heard and included. And the parents raising them deserve to be supported too.

Real stories. Real strength. Real love.

🚨 Advocacy Post: Emergency Housing Must Work for Families with Disabilities

In Nassau County, families facing homelessness are told to turn to emergency housing for help. But for families with disabilities, that system is often not equipped to meet even the most basic needs.

There is no guaranteed right to shelter here. That means families in crisis can be denied assistance—or placed in temporary housing that is unsafe or inaccessible.

Hotels and shelters used for emergency placements are frequently:
- Not wheelchair accessible
- Unable to support medical equipment
- Overstimulating or unsafe for individuals with developmental or mental health conditions

Families are left to navigate a system that requires documentation, persistence, and constant advocacy—while already in crisis.

And even when accommodations are requested under the ADA, delays are common. Transfers to appropriate housing can take days, weeks, or longer. For a family caring for someone with special needs, that delay can have serious physical and emotional consequences.

This is not just a housing issue. It’s a public health issue. It’s a disability rights issue.

Every family deserves safe, accessible emergency housing—without barriers, without delays, and without having to fight for what should already be guaranteed.

✅ What Needs to Change:
- Increase accessible emergency housing units in Nassau County
- Ensure ADA-compliant placements immediately, not eventually
- Streamline DSS processes for families with documented disabilities
- Expand funding for disability-specific housing support
- Create accountability when accommodations are not met

Families with disabilities should not be left behind in moments of crisis.

Housing is a right—and accessibility is not optional.
