Every summer, we choose a theme to be the centerpiece of our worship and devotions, including Morning Watch. The theme for Summer 2026 was ReFresh! Experience Living Water, John 4:10.

In 1976, Rev Pat Heafner stepped down from his role as Tekoa’s summer director and went to St Andrews UMC. He asked if they would be willing to try out a weekend retreat at camp; they said yes, and Family Camp was born. Shortly after, Cokesbury UMC started their own retreat tradition, and in 2013 they joined forces.
We are thrilled to celebrate 50 years of Labor Day Weekend Family Camp and so grateful for these congregations who not only visit but help to steward camp in so many ways.
Here’s to another 50 years of raising those candles high!
(Pic 2 shows everyone who has been coming for 40 years or more - wow!)

Built in 1946, Locust Cabin is older than Camp Tekoa and provided housing for generations of campers. We are excited to announce that is now serving camp in a new way, as Locust Nature Center!
The Nature Center includes Clancy’s Porch (in honor of Clancy Dowless), built by Nomads volunteers; a new trail and dock for fishing; and an interior renovation and nature curriculum created by Julia Trollinger and Elizabeth Isley for their Girl Scout Gold Awards.
The Nature Center has been used by campers all summer for exploration, crafts and games, and learning about the natural world of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is an ideal spot for small group gatherings and there is even a patch that campers can earn.
We are thrilled about all of the ways in which Locust is benefiting camp and can’t wait to see how it is used in the years to come. This is a perfect example of the amazing work our community can do and we are so grateful to everyone who contributed!

Our staff and break campers gathered this morning to commemorate the 2 year anniversary of Hurricane Helene. We met on the island, in front of the tree we planted last year in the place where an old oak had stood for generations. As a group, we remembered all those affected by the storm, recognized the recovery work still to be done in our region, and were grateful for or our community and for the scholarships we have been able to offer to campers affected by Helene. 2 of of our campers read to us from Psalm 46, reminding us that God is our refuge and strength. We miss our old oak, gone in the storm, but we look ahead to the campers and visitors who will be greeted by the new one. ❤️
