When reviewing bloodwork, the sodium-to-potassium (Na:K) ratio can provide valuable clues about how well the adrenal glands are functioning.
The adrenal glands produce aldosterone, a hormone that helps regulate fluid balance and blood pressure by telling the kidneys to retain sodium and excrete potassium. When aldosterone production is reduced, sodium levels may trend lower while potassium levels rise, resulting in a lower sodium-to-potassium ratio. Conversely, higher aldosterone activity tends to promote sodium retention and potassium loss, increasing the ratio.
