🎃 By October, athletes have already accumulated weeks of practices, games, lifting, travel, and recovery demands. So when speed, explosiveness, or confidence starts to fade late in competition, we want to understand what is actually changing.

𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳-𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥?

🔎 Those are very different problems—and they require very different solutions.

❗This is where sports physical therapy and performance assessment become valuable. At Fick PT & Performance, we look at the full picture instead of automatically adding more conditioning or more training.

⚠️ Sometimes an athlete needs more capacity. Sometimes they need better recovery. Sometimes strength or power has dropped off. And sometimes the issue is a pain or movement limitation that only becomes obvious when the game reaches its highest demands.

𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁.

📣 It is feedback.

🌟 And the goal is to understand what that feedback is telling us before simply asking the athlete to do more.

👉 If your speed, power, or movement starts to change as competition goes on, schedule a sports physical therapy assessment with Fick PT & Performance and let’s figure out what is actually limiting you.

📊 You tested great in August. Would your body give us the same answers today?

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

🔎 A preseason baseline is useful because it gives us a picture of how an athlete was producing force, absorbing force, and moving before weeks of practices and competition began.

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯.

⚠️ Strength can shift. Power can drop. One side may start doing more work than the other. An athlete may still feel “fine” while their body is quietly adapting to accumulated workload, soreness, or an old injury.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

📍At Fick PT & Performance, we use VALD ForceDecks to look at things like jump performance, force production, force absorption, and side-to-side differences. The goal is not to collect data for the sake of having numbers.

🛑 It is to compare where the athlete is now to where they were earlier in the season and ask whether anything meaningful has changed.

📈 Sometimes the data confirms that an athlete is maintaining the qualities we want.

📉 Other times, it gives us a reason to adjust strength work, recovery, workload, or treatment before those changes begin affecting performance.

⚠️ Under pressure, athletes tend to fall back on the movement patterns, strength, and habits they have built over time. The goal of training and sports physical therapy is not simply to help an athlete perform a movement correctly when everything is controlled.

👉 It is to make that movement reliable enough that it still shows up when the environment becomes fast, unpredictable, and competitive.

🛑 This is one reason we care about repetition, progressive loading, strength, movement quality, and sport-specific exposure. We are not only trying to improve what an athlete can do in the clinic.

❗We are trying to build qualities they can trust when they no longer have time to think about them.

👉 An athlete should not have to remind themselves how to control their knee during a cut or how to load one leg during a landing in the middle of competition.

📍At Fick PT & Performance, we want the work athletes do in rehab and training to transfer beyond the clinic—into the moments when speed increases, decisions happen quickly, and performance matters most.

👉 If you are returning from an injury or preparing for competition, sports physical therapy can help make sure the movement patterns you are building are ready to show up when your sport demands them.

💭 Think about everything your body has been through since preseason.

👉 Weeks of practices. Games. Lifting. Sprinting. Travel. School. Early mornings. Late nights. Soreness that comes and goes. Maybe an ankle you’ve been managing or a knee that feels a little different after games than it did in August.

𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘴 𝘶𝘱.

⚠️ By this point in the season, we’re not only interested in where an athlete started. We want to know how their body has responded to everything that has happened since.

❓Is strength holding up? Are they still moving with the same control? Are they recovering between competitions? Does something begin to change as fatigue builds? Is an old injury quietly becoming more noticeable as the workload accumulates?

𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴.

🔎 They give us context.

🌟 An athlete can enter a season feeling strong and prepared and still need something different two months later. Maybe the priority shifts toward recovery. Maybe strength needs to be maintained. Maybe recurring soreness deserves a closer look. Or maybe everything is holding up exactly the way we hoped.

❗That’s why in-season sports physical therapy shouldn’t rely on how an athlete looked in August. We need to make decisions based on the athlete standing in front of us today.

🛑 Because the deeper you get into your season, the more important it becomes to understand what is actually holding up when it counts.

👉 If your body feels different now than it did at the beginning of your season, schedule a sports physical therapy assessment with Fick PT & Performance. Let’s figure out what has changed and what you need to keep performing through the rest of your season.

✔️ Maybe you’ve noticed that soreness is lasting longer than it did early in the season.

✔️ Maybe an old injury only shows up after games.

✔️ Maybe your body feels completely different on Friday than it does on Monday.

✔️ Maybe you’ve learned that you recover well from certain workloads but struggle when practices, lifting, travel, and competition start stacking up.

Or maybe you feel better than you expected and your body is handling the season exactly the way you hoped it would.

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

⚠️ Because a season isn’t only something you get through. It constantly gives you feedback about how your body is moving, recovering, adapting, and responding to the demands of your sport.

🌟 At Fick PT & Performance, sports physical therapy is about helping athletes make sense of that information.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

❗When an athlete is dealing with pain or recurring soreness, the instinct is often to back off completely.

👍 And sometimes that is exactly what the body needs.

⚠️ But other times, the bigger issue is that the athlete simply isn’t prepared for the amount of force, speed, or repetition their sport is asking them to tolerate.

𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺.

👉 We may need to progressively add strength, controlled loading, sprint exposure, change-of-direction work, or sport-specific movement so the body can better handle the demands that keep bringing the symptoms back.

💫 That’s one of the biggest decisions we make in sports physical therapy: knowing when to protect an athlete and when to begin asking more of them.

🛑 Because the goal isn’t to avoid stress.

✅ It’s to build a body that can tolerate the right amount of stress at the right time.

👉 At Fick PT & Performance, we look at how the athlete is moving, what their sport requires, how symptoms respond to load, and what qualities still need to be rebuilt before deciding what comes next.

⚠️ Parents, “I’m fine” isn’t always the whole story.

❗Athletes often minimize what they’re feeling because they don’t want to miss practice, lose playing time, or feel like they’re falling behind. That doesn’t mean they’re hiding something serious—it just means parents may need to pay attention to more than the words.

🔎 Watch how your athlete moves after games and practices. Are they suddenly limping, favoring one side, moving more slowly on stairs, or repeatedly stretching and icing the same area? Do they hesitate during movements that used to look natural? Are they recovering normally between sessions, or do they seem increasingly sore and fatigued as the week goes on?

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗼.

🛑 An athlete may say they feel fine while avoiding full-speed cuts, protecting a previously injured leg, or hesitating before contact. Those subtle changes can be signs that their body—or their confidence in it—is not handling the demands of the season the way it normally does.

👉 The goal isn’t to analyze every ache or assume every sore muscle is an injury. Some soreness is part of sport.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻.

🏃 When the same pain keeps returning, movement starts changing, recovery is getting harder, or an old injury seems to be affecting how your athlete competes, that is useful information worth paying attention to.

🌟 Sports physical therapy can help determine whether your athlete is simply adapting to the season or whether something needs to be addressed before it begins costing them playing time.

👉 If you’ve noticed a change in how your athlete is moving, recovering, or trusting their body, schedule a sports physical therapy assessment with Fick PT & Performance. Sometimes catching the pattern early is the best way to keep the season moving forward.

❗The right plan for an athlete last week may not be the right plan this week.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴.

👉 One week, an athlete may need more strength work because they are handling practice well and have room to build capacity. The next week, they may have two games, less recovery time, and soreness that is starting to accumulate. Suddenly, the priority shifts.

⚠️ Instead of adding more, we may pull back on lifting, increase recovery, modify part of practice, or focus treatment on whatever is limiting them most in that moment.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆.

𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯-𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨.

📍 At Fick PT & Performance, we do not believe athletes should be forced into the exact same plan week after week when their workload, symptoms, recovery, and competition schedule are constantly changing.

𝗪𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

❓Are they recovering between sessions? Is pain changing? Are they still moving well under fatigue? Has their game schedule increased? Do they need more capacity, or do they need more recovery?

𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁.

✔️ Sometimes progress means adding more.

✔️ Sometimes progress means doing less for a few days so the athlete can adapt and keep moving forward.

❗The plan should respond to the athlete—not force the athlete to fit the plan.

👉 If your body is feeling different from one week to the next, your plan may need to change too. Schedule a sports physical therapy assessment with Fick PT & Performance and let’s make sure your treatment, training, and recovery still match the demands of your season.

❓You rested. It felt better. You went back to your sport…and the pain came right back.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁.

👉 Rest can be exactly what an irritated area needs in the short term. Reducing activity can settle symptoms and give the body a break from whatever was aggravating it. But if the same problem returns as soon as running, lifting, practice, or competition resumes, simply taking more time off may not answer the bigger question:

❗Why can your body feel good at rest but struggle when the demands return?

🤝 That's where the conversation changes.

⚠️ Instead of only asking how to make the pain go away, we start looking at what the athlete may still be missing. Has strength dropped? Is mobility limiting how force is distributed? Is an old injury changing movement? Did training volume increase faster than the body was prepared for? Does the athlete simply need a more gradual progression back to higher loads?

🌟 This is an important part of sports physical therapy because returning to sport requires more than the absence of symptoms. The body also has to rebuild the capacity to tolerate sprinting, cutting, jumping, lifting, contact, and repeated effort without falling back into the same pattern.

💯 Sometimes that means treatment. Sometimes it means strength, progressive loading, movement work, or adjusting how quickly an athlete returns to full participation. Often, it is a combination.

🛑 Rest can calm a problem down. It doesn't always prepare the body for what caused the problem in the first place.

📍 At Fick PT & Performance, our goal is to figure out what still needs to be restored so you're not stuck in the cycle of rest → feel better → return → hurt again.

👉 If you've already tried resting and the same pain keeps returning when you get back to your sport, schedule a sports physical therapy assessment. Let's figure out what your body needs to tolerate the demands of your season—not just what makes it feel better when you're doing less.
