Your shoulder’s moving parts have different jobs.

The textbook describes rotator cuff tears as either acute/traumatic or chronic/attritional. A careful history—including whether there was an injury—is important when a clinician evaluates shoulder symptoms.

Your shoulder can move in many directions—but it needs a team to stay controlled.

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that helps stabilize the shoulder and supports lifting and rotation. Repetitive overhead activity, sports, and age-related changes can affect these tendons. Pain or weakness that sticks around is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Which activity challenges your shoulders most:
Lifting?
Reaching?
Swimming?
or Throwing?

Does your shoulder complain most when you reach overhead?

The textbook notes that rotator cuff tears and shoulder impingement can have similar symptoms. Pain is commonly reported around the outside of the shoulder and may become more noticeable with overhead activity. These symptoms are clues to discuss with a qualified clinician—not a diagnosis from a social post.

Did your shoulder pain start after one big lift—or creep in during everyday life?

Shoulder discomfort can have different causes, including rotator cuff problems, irritation around the shoulder, AC joint injuries, instability, or arthritis. Where and when pain shows up can offer clues, but it cannot confirm the cause on its own. Save this reminder: recurring or worsening pain deserves attention.

What activity first made you notice your shoulder pain?

You searched for it. Here's what actually shows up in the exam room for this one. 🔍

Shoulder pain that flares when you raise your arm can have several causes, including one of a few things — rotator cuff irritation, impingement, bursitis, or less often, a tear. The internet can tell you the possibilities. It can't tell you which one is actually going on with your shoulder.

Would you believe an 80-year-old with 5 joint surgeries just took 1st place in powerlifting?"

Two knee replacements. Two hip replacements. A rotator cuff repair. If anyone had an excuse to slow down, it was Phyllis Stine.

Instead? She's out here breaking records.

Her secret isn't really a secret at all — she said it herself: "Get off the couch."

No overthinking it. No waiting for the "right time." Just showing up, trusting her medical team (shoutout Dr. Boughanem 🧡), and doing the work.

Phyllis proves that age and surgery don't define your limits—your mindset does. What’s a goal you’ve been holding back on?

At 80 years old, our patient Phyllis Stine took first place in BOTH bench press and deadlift at Hawai'i's Strongest WABDL Championships. 🏆

Exactly one year after Dr. Boughanem performed her rotator cuff repair, Phyllis was back on the platform breaking records — building on the bilateral knee and hip replacements he's guided her through over 20+ years of care.

Swipe through for 5 things her comeback taught us. 👉

This is the kind of outcome we work for at HISOI — not just repair, but a full return to the life patients want to keep living.
