A snapshot of joy: a grandmother holds her grandchild in the KIKOP catchment area, Kisii County, Kenya. Between 2017 and 2024, under-five mortality in the project area declined by 80% and neonatal mortality by 79% — verified through population-based vital events surveillance.

“We then split into small groups and went to the women’s homes to build “tippy taps” — a simple handwashing device designed to help keep the women and their babies healthy. Working alongside the mothers, we were able to build four tippy taps in the village. I felt deeply honored to see where these women live, hear about their experiences, and play a small part in making their homes a little healthier.”

Our programs reach everyone — not just the easy-to-reach.

Equity is the test that breaks most community-health programs. They reach the families closest to the road, the mothers who already trust the system, the children who would have survived anyway. Our approach, Community-Based, Impact-Oriented (CBIO+) was designed to do the opposite - reach those previously thought unreachable - and the data show it did.

Imagine delivering a baby in complete darkness.

For healthcare providers in remote and off-grid communities, power outages aren’t just a mild inconvenience—they are a life-threatening crisis. Delivering a baby or managing postpartum complications by the flickering light of a cell phone or kerosene lamp puts both mother and child at severe risk.

Through innovative clean energy partnerships, Impact Global Health Alliance is bringing solar power and microgrids to rural birthing centers and health facilities in places like Guatemala and Kenya. 💡☀️

True health equity requires infrastructure. By pairing community-led maternal health programs with sustainable solar energy, we can ensure every mother has a safe, clean, and well-lit environment to bring new life into the world.

A key feature of our educational programs is the Care Group. As one board member writes, “Being a teacher, what fascinated me most was observing a Care Group. The Care Group volunteer is elected by the women of 10-12 households that have a pregnant mother or a child under 2. These trained volunteers build relationships, and I believe it is the trust in these women, a peer, that allows community members to embrace new educational material.”

"The hums of motorbikes and brays of grazing cows pervade the bustling community of Kisii, a town of over 100,000 nestled in the hilly highlands of western Kenya. For the next six weeks, I will be working as a project intern with the Kisii Konya Oroiboro Project (KIKOP)—a community led organization that aims to address maternal and child mortality through facilitating peer-to-peer Care Groups of mothers, home visits to monitor the wellbeing of mothers and their children, youth education programming, and strengthening of the existing healthcare system to support maternal, child, and reproductive health. As I transition to life seven hours ahead of North Carolina, I’ve noticed that KIKOP has been going through a few transitions of its own."

A simple question, rigorously answered.

Can a community-led approach to maternal and child health — built on a household census, peer-to-peer behavior change, and locally-owned maternity centers — actually move the needle on mortality, equity, and women's empowerment in one of the most under-served regions of Latin America? And does the same model hold in rural sub-Saharan Africa?
