Painful intimacy can be one of the less-talked-about changes that comes with menopause..

Changes in estrogen can affect vaginal tissues and lubrication, but discomfort may also involve the pelvic floor.

When pain is present, the muscles may tighten or become more sensitive, which can add to burning, pressure, or discomfort during intimacy.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help identify what may be contributing to your symptoms and support a more comfortable, individualized approach to care.

Your comfort and s*xual health are part of your overall health, and they deserve attention, too!

Could your pelvic floor be too tight?

Your pelvic floor muscles are meant to contract and relax. When those muscles have difficulty letting go, you may notice symptoms such as pelvic pain or pressure, discomfort with intimacy, difficulty emptying your bladder, or trouble relaxing during bowel movements.

✨ Strong doesn’t always mean better. Your pelvic floor also needs the ability to relax and coordinate properly for everyday function.

Because these symptoms can have many causes, a pelvic floor physical therapist can assess how your muscles are working and help determine what your body may need.

Your pelvic floor doesn’t always need more strengthening!

Pelvic floor muscles can function differently from person to person. Some may have difficulty relaxing, while others may have difficulty activating effectively.

✨ That’s why the right approach depends on how your pelvic floor is functioning.

For an overactive pelvic floor, adding more strengthening may not be helpful. For an underactive pelvic floor, targeted strengthening may be part of the approach.

A pelvic floor physical therapist can assess how your muscles contract, relax, and coordinate to better understand what your body may need.

Feel like you always need to p*e, even when you just went? đźš˝

Frequent or persistent urinary urges can happen for many reasons, and it doesn’t always mean your bladder is full.

Bladder habits, pelvic floor dysfunction, overactive bladder, UTIs, hormonal changes, certain medications, and other health conditions may all play a role.

✨ Even habits like going “just in case” or rushing to the bathroom at the first sensation can influence how your bladder and brain communicate over time.

Understanding when, how often, and what triggers your urge to go can provide helpful clues about what may be contributing.

Not all bladder leaks are the same.

Stress incontinence typically happens with increased pressure or movement, like coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting.

Urge incontinence is associated with a sudden, difficult-to-control urge to p*e and may lead to leakage before you make it to the bathroom.

And yes, you can experience both! This is known as mixed urinary incontinence.

✨ Understanding when and how your leakage happens can help identify what may be contributing and what approach may be appropriate for you.

09/26/2026

Endometriosis and pelvic floor dysfunction are not the same condition, but they can occur together.

When pelvic pain is persistent, the pelvic floor muscles may respond by tightening or guarding. Over time, this can contribute to muscle tension, difficulty relaxing, pain with intimacy or bowel movements, and other bladder or bowel symptoms.

✨ Pelvic floor physical therapy doesn’t treat endometriosis itself. Instead, it may help address pelvic floor dysfunction and muscle or movement-related symptoms that occur alongside it.

Because endometriosis can affect everyone differently, care may involve a multidisciplinary approach tailored to your individual symptoms and goals.

Swipe through to learn more about the connection between endometriosis and your pelvic floor.
