Some kids find it really hard to understand or use language, and it isn't explained by autism, hearing loss, or another condition. This is called Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

DLD affects about 7% of children (Norbury et al., 2016). That's roughly 2 kids in every classroom. Yet most parents, and even many teachers, have never heard of it.

Kids with DLD are often described as "not paying attention" or "not trying hard enough." In reality, language is simply harder for them to process. With the right support, they can make real progress.

Today is DLD Awareness Day. If any of this sounds familiar, send us a message. We're happy to talk it through.

Jose Miguel grew up with a mom who is an SLP! While he was out skateboarding and playing baseball, his mom was treating patients. His parents would eventually be the founders of Arley Therapy Services.

Early in his college career, Jose decided on studying psychology. He graduated from UCF with a degree in psychology but he didn’t pursue a career in psychology. Instead, he took a hard look at his options and chose to pursue a career in speech-language pathology.
This was a novel idea but it was more out of the ordinary given his lack of experience in healthcare and with a pediatric population. He leaned on the guidance of both his direct supervisor and his mom to learn the ropes. He has since obtained his SLPA license and he’s acquired certifications in DIR Floortime 101, MYOTools 101 and 102 and Natural Language Acquisition.
Where he was once insecure about treating autistic client, he is now absolutely confident in his skill set to offer services to any client with a developmental delay including autistic people.

Good news for busy parents: you don't need to fill every minute with words.

A study from MIT (Romeo et al., 2018) found that back-and-forth conversation (you talk, your child responds, you respond again) was more closely linked to language-related brain activity than the total number of words children heard.

And a "turn" doesn't have to be a word. A babble, a point, or a smile counts too. When you respond, you show your child that communication works.

How many words should my child be saying? 🤔💬

Vocabulary grows quickly during the early years, and knowing the general vocabulary milestones can help you better understand your child’s language development.

Remember: milestones are a guide, not a competition. 💜 Every child develops differently, and there can be a wide range of what’s expected at each age.

As vocabulary grows, children begin to use words to:
✨ Ask for what they want
✨ Name people and objects
✨ Express feelings and ideas
✨ Answer questions
✨ Combine words into phrases and sentences
✨ Connect and interact with others

The most important thing isn’t comparing your child to another child—it’s paying attention to their individual progress over time.

If you’re concerned that your child isn’t meeting expected communication milestones, talking with a Speech-Language Pathologist can help determine whether additional support may be beneficial.

💬 How many new words has your little one surprised you with lately?
