Arthur Chan, DPT
Physical Therapist

Arthur Chan brings over a decade of international clinical experience in physical therapy. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Hawaii, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a Master of Science in Stroke and Clinical Neurosciences from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Arthur’s experience spans acute hospitals, outpatient clinics, and community-based care, with a focus on neurological, orthopedic, and geriatric rehabilitation. He is especially passionate about helping older adults prevent falls, regain independence, and move safely while supporting their families and caregivers.

Outside the clinic, Arthur enjoys surfing, running, soccer, gardening, and woodworking.

💪 Strength Training for Kids: Safe, Healthy & Evidence-Based

One of the most common myths about kids lifting weights is that it will stunt their growth or damage their growth plates. Current research does not support this when strength training is appropriately designed, supervised, and performed with proper technique.

In fact, age-appropriate resistance training can offer many benefits for children and adolescents:

✅ Builds stronger muscles and bones
✅ Improves strength, coordination, balance & athletic performance
✅ Supports healthy bone development
✅ May help reduce the risk of sports-related injuries
✅ Builds confidence and encourages lifelong exercise habits

Strength training for kids also doesn’t have to mean lifting extremely heavy weights. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, medicine balls, kettlebells, and appropriately loaded weights can all be used.

The emphasis should be on good technique, appropriate resistance, gradual progression, and qualified adult supervision—not testing maximal lifts or trying to train like an adult bodybuilder.

🏋️ The takeaway: Properly supervised strength training does not stunt a child’s growth. Done correctly, it can be a safe and valuable part of helping kids become stronger, healthier, and more confident.
