Wondering what a PRP injection should cost?

Dr. Lin explains that the price can reflect much more than the injection itself. The way PRP is prepared and delivered can vary significantly from one clinic to another.

Before comparing prices, consider asking:

• Is the PRP customized for your diagnosis and medical history?
• Is the injection performed with live image guidance?
• Is your doctor evaluating all of the structures that may be contributing to your pain?

With PRP, cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean better. Precision, preparation, and the overall treatment plan matter.

A patient recently asked Dr. Lin about prolotherapy.

Prolotherapy is an older treatment approach that uses an irritant solution to stimulate a healing response in painful or unstable tissues.

Today, regenerative medicine offers additional options, including PRP, made from your own blood, and BMAC, prepared from your own bone marrow.

For the right patient, these orthobiologic treatments may help support the body’s natural healing response in painful knees, shoulders, and other musculoskeletal injuries.

The best option depends on your diagnosis, the tissue involved, and your individual treatment goals.

If you’ve had PRP or BMAC, or you’re trying to avoid surgery, the rehabilitation plan matters just as much as the procedure itself.

Dr. Lin explains why a more individualized, sports focused approach to physical therapy can be especially helpful for knee osteoarthritis.

That may include a full biomechanical assessment looking at strength, movement patterns, stability, and how your hips, knees, and core are working together.

Generic exercises may not address the specific factors contributing to your pain.

If you’re choosing a physical therapist, ask whether they have experience with knee OA, post orthobiologic rehabilitation, and movement based assessment.

Cortisone can work quickly to reduce inflammation and pain, but short term relief doesn’t always mean the underlying problem is being addressed.

Dr. Lin explains that repeated cortisone injections may also affect the body’s normal healing response and, over time, can have downsides for joint health.

That’s why it’s important to understand the full picture before relying on injection after injection.

arianrahbell asked how PRP may help when radiofrequency ablation hasn’t.

Dr. Lin explains that the two treatments work very differently.

RF ablation targets nerves that transmit pain signals, which may provide relief for some patients, but it doesn’t necessarily address the underlying tissue causing the pain.

PRP, on the other hand, uses concentrated platelets from your own blood to support the body’s natural healing response in appropriately selected tissues.

If an ablation hasn’t provided the relief you expected, the next step shouldn’t simply be another procedure. A thorough evaluation can help determine what’s actually causing the pain and whether PRP or another treatment may be appropriate.

Locking, popping, clicking, swelling, or feeling like your knee might give out can all be signs that the meniscus or other structures inside the knee need a closer look.

Dr. Lin explains that these symptoms are common, but they shouldn’t be ignored. Getting the right diagnosis early can help you understand what’s actually causing the problem and what treatment options may be available before it gets worse.

With cortisone injections, more isn’t always better.

Dr. Lin explains that lower doses may sometimes provide the desired anti-inflammatory effect while limiting unnecessary exposure to higher amounts of steroid.

Just as important is where the medication is placed. Using live image guidance can help improve injection accuracy and ensure the treatment reaches the intended area.

If you’re considering a cortisone injection, it’s worth asking:

How much cortisone are you using?
Will the injection be image guided?
Why is this dose appropriate for my condition?

The details matter when it comes to balancing short-term relief with long-term joint health.

Hyaluronic acid is usually safer than cortisone, but some people react to the gel, causing inflammation that can mimic infection. If pain, swelling, or redness spike after the shot, see your doctor right away — infections need urgent care.

Most importantly:
- Gel shouldn’t be mixed with cortisone
- Injections must be done with image guidance
- Sterile technique matters

If gel didn’t help, you still have options — PRP, BMAC, and proper diagnosis can make all the difference.

Before any knee injection, ask your doctor two things:

1. What guidance are you using—ultrasound or X-ray?
Image guidance matters. It’s the difference between hitting the joint… or missing it.

2. Is this injection helping healing, or just reducing inflammation?
Some shots only mask pain. Others actually support tissue recovery.

Knowing the difference can change your outcome. Always ask.
