Sometimes powerlessness isn’t about what’s happening.
It’s about what we put in the space between ourselves and what’s happening.
I have to.
I should.
I don’t have enough time.
There’s too much to do.
I can’t slow down.
I don’t have a choice.
And suddenly, we’re not just carrying the demands of our lives.
We’re carrying the story that we are trapped inside them.
I’ve been experimenting with this in my own life lately, intentionally stretching beyond what I thought my capacity was, while paying attention to the thoughts I attach to what I’m doing.
And I’ve been surprised by how much I can hold and still feel energized when I’m not simultaneously telling myself how overwhelmed, depleted, or resentful I should be.
I genuinely think this is a huge piece of burnout that we don’t talk about enough.
Yes, sometimes the load really is too much. Rest matters. Boundaries matter. Systems and support matter.
But sometimes what’s exhausting us isn’t only the thing itself.
It’s the relationship we’re having with it.
So try this experiment with me this week:
Notice every time you say, “I have to…”
And see what changes when you replace it with:
“I choose to…” or
“I get to…”
Not as toxic positivity. Not to pretend you love everything you have to do.
But to remind yourself where you still have agency.
Because the language we use can either reinforce our powerlessness or return us to our power.
