Things I considered when developing this playlist

1. tone - you can also think of this as the “mood.” For mornings I don’t want to get out of bed I’m usually pretty grumpy or melancholy about having to be up. So the tone of the opening songs are more melancholy.

2. instrumentation - I focus on strings, woodwinds, piano for the instrumental pieces. These instruments can provide moodier music and dynamics can be soft and quiet.

3. Dynamics - speaking of dynamics! I don’t want early morning music to be too loud so I look for music that doesn’t have large swings in volume or dynamics. It all stays a little more even. A few small crescendos (getting progressively louder) or decrescendos (getting progressively softer); but nothing major or fast in either direction.

4. lyrics - I choose to have music with lyrics come in later in the playlist as my brain wakes up a bit more. As a singer I tend to get wrapped up in lyrics so starting it too soon can make me more frustrated as it is another element my brain is trying to focus on. Lyrics also lead to singing and singing is a facet I want to engage in later when I am ready to be happier. Singing has been shown to increase endorphins which improves mood.

5. melody - melodies I look for are a bit more repetitive, no jazz for me early in the morning. Repetition can soothe the brain and provide structure to hold onto.

6. harmony - I love harmony but early morning is made for more simple harmonies in thirds and fifths, they add layers but not complexity to the listening experience.

What would you add or remove from the playlist for yourself?

The song is “The Ballad of Love and Hate” by The Avett Brothers. Opened up such great conversation about how we talk to ourselves and how we can keep working towards finding and using that loving voice inside all of us.
Any songs like that I should listen to?

I love utilizing songwriting and it’s been a joy finding how easily it can be used in a variety of settings and with a wide range of goals.

It’s not just mental health and self expression. It’s improving the clients use and comfort level with their AAC, it’s practicing answering questions, even asking questions if the client wants to engage with their peers in a different way, and it’s school academics like recalling and retelling a story.

Which one surprised you?

For more I actually wrote a blog post about my love of songwriting on the Meraki music tx dot com website. Reach out and I’ll send the link if you are interested!

Happy football Saturday to all who celebrate. Before all the stimulation take a moment of quiet. The brain needs both rest (quiet) and stimulation (visual, auditory, sensory stimulation). The quiet and rest helps the brain process and move memories from short term into long term.
You got some sleep, now take one more moment of rest before getting to a fun Saturday.

Happy Friday!

I hope everyone finds a chance to make some music, listen to some music, or be in the presence of some live music making. ❤️ I’ll be listening to the tones of babies and kids making music at home and probably some dinosaur songs for good measure (What Colour Were the Dinosaurs is my personal favorite).

Quick reminder to listen to music and sing!

Three reasons:
1) research is showing that adults who listen to music everyday have a decrease in risk for cognitive decline like Alzheimer’s and dementia
2) singing helps decrease cortisol and increase endorphins
3) improves social bonding. Listen and singalong (if comfortable) with family and friends.
What are you singing along to these days?

Music is stored deep in our memory. This makes it one of the last things we forget.

This is why music therapy is still a great tool with those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and diseases causing cognitive decline. Using familiar music (with positive associations) has shown to decrease anxiety, improve relaxation, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and improve connection with loved ones. For our family members loving their person with dementia it can become hard to find ways to connect as the disease progresses. Music offers the chance to reminisce and also be present in a moment together. ❤️
