How Caregivers Can Combat the Holiday Blues
A message from Anchor Health Solutions

The holidays can bring joy—but for caregivers, they can also bring extra responsibilities, loneliness, and emotional exhaustion. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Your well-being deserves care, too.

Here are a few ways to make room for yourself this season:

‱ Let go of perfection. Simplify meals, shorten visits, and choose traditions that feel manageable. It’s okay for this year to look different.
‱ Ask for specific help. Let family or friends handle errands, bring a meal, or spend time with your loved one while you rest.
‱ Stay connected. Call a friend, join a caregiver support group, or talk with someone you trust.
‱ Take small mental breaks. Enjoy a quiet cup of tea, listen to music, or practice slow breathing. Arrange coverage before stepping away if your loved one needs supervision.
‱ Give yourself grace. You don’t have to feel festive every day or say yes to every invitation.

Consider Respite Care
Respite care offers temporary relief from caregiving responsibilities, allowing you to take a mental break while someone else attends to your loved one’s needs. A trusted family member or professional respite provider may give you time to rest, reconnect with friends, or simply enjoy time to yourself.

Taking a break is not abandoning your loved one—it’s caring for yourself, too.

If sadness becomes persistent, overwhelming, or interferes with daily life, reach out to a health care professional or counselor.

🎀 THE CAREGIVER’S BREAKDOWN

YOU’RE TAKING CARE OF EVERYONE
BUT WHO’S TAKING CARE OF YOU?

🎀 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Caregivers are often the ones reminding everyone else:

💊 “Did you take your medicine?”
📅 “Did you make your appointment?”
🚗 “I’ll take you to your doctor.”
❀ “I’m here. I’ve got you.”

But here’s the question:

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CHECKED ON YOU?

Breast cancer doesn’t care if you’re a caregiver.
It doesn’t care if your schedule is packed.
It doesn’t care if someone else “needs you more.”

YOU MATTER TOO.

🎀 CAREGIVERS: MAKE YOUR HEALTH PART OF THE CARE PLAN.

✔ Know your personal and family history.
✔ Know what’s normal for your body.
✔ Follow recommended breast cancer screening guidelines for your age and risk level.
✔ Don’t ignore changes or symptoms—talk with your healthcare provider.
✔ If you have a higher risk, ask your provider whether you need an earlier or different screening plan.
✔ Put YOUR appointments on the calendar—just like you do for the person you care for.

AND REMEMBER

Being strong doesn’t mean ignoring your own health.

Being a caregiver doesn’t mean putting yourself last.

YOU CANNOT POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP.

🎀 THIS MONTH, DON’T JUST WEAR THE RIBBON.

MAKE THE APPOINTMENT.
ASK THE QUESTION.
GET THE SCREENING.
TAKE CARE OF YOU.

🚹 THE SYSTEM IS CONFUSING. YOU DON’T HAVE TO NAVIGATE IT ALONE.

Working With a Case Manager When Services or Medical Equipment Are Denied

Families often hear:

❌ “Not medically necessary.”
❌ “Missing documentation.”
❌ “Not covered.”
❌ “Authorization denied.”
❌ “The request doesn’t meet criteria.”

And sometimes the problem isn’t that your loved one doesn’t need the service or equipment.

It may be that the request didn’t contain the right documentation, clinical language, criteria, or supporting information required by the system.

📋 THIS IS WHERE YOUR CASE MANAGER CAN HELP.

A Case Manager can help you:

đŸ”č Understand what services or resources may be available
đŸ”č Identify what documentation is needed
đŸ”č Coordinate with doctors, therapists, hospitals, insurance companies and providers
đŸ”č Help communicate your loved one’s needs clearly
đŸ”č Track referrals, authorizations and requests
đŸ”č Help identify the next step after a denial
đŸ”č Connect the family with additional resources when one pathway doesn’t work

🛑 DON’T JUST ACCEPT “DENIED.”

Ask:

“Why was it denied?”

“What documentation or criteria are missing?”

“Can the request be reconsidered or appealed?”

“Who needs to provide the supporting information?”

“What is our next step?”

💙 CAREGIVER TIP:

Keep a folder—or digital file—with:

📁 Medical records
📁 Therapy evaluations
📁 Physician orders
📁 Denial letters
📁 Authorization numbers
📁 Names and contact information
📁 Dates of calls and conversations

Documentation creates a trail.

And that trail can become extremely important when you’re trying to get the right support for your loved one.

đŸ©ș REMEMBER:

You are not “being difficult” by asking questions.

You are advocating.

Your Case Manager can be a partner in helping you understand the process, identify barriers and keep the conversation moving.

💙 DON’T JUST HEAR “NO.”
UNDERSTAND WHY. KNOW YOUR NEXT STEP.

THE CAREGIVER’S BREAKDOWN
Because navigating care shouldn’t require a degree in bureaucracy.

“YOU HAVE A CASE MANAGER
 NOW WHAT?”

How Caregivers Can Work With a Case Manager to Get the Right Support

YOU HAVE A CASE MANAGER
 NOW WHAT?

Having a case manager is only the beginning.

A case manager can help connect the dots between healthcare, insurance, medications, housing, therapy, transportation, community resources and long-term support.

👉 But they need YOU to help them understand the whole picture.

âž»

KNOW WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

A case manager may help coordinate:

đŸ„ Hospital & healthcare services
💊 Medications & pharmacy needs
🧠 Behavioral health resources
🏠 Housing & placement options
🚗 Transportation
đŸŠœ DME & mobility equipment
💰 Insurance & benefit navigation
đŸ‘©đŸœâ€âš•ïž Therapy & other services
📋 Follow-up care & community resources

Important: Not every case manager has access to every resource.

Ask:
“What can you help me coordinate, and what is outside your role?”

âž»
BRING THE WHOLE STORY

Don’t just tell the case manager what happened today.

Tell them what is changing.

Share:

‱ New symptoms or behaviors
‱ Falls or safety concerns
‱ Medication problems
‱ Changes in eating or sleeping
‱ Difficulty managing appointments
‱ Changes in mobility
‱ Caregiver burnout or gaps in coverage
‱ Problems with transportation, housing or finances

📌 Small changes can become big problems when nobody connects the dots.

âž»

ASK BETTER QUESTIONS

Instead of:

❌ “Can you help me?”

Try:

✅ “What resources are available for this situation?”
✅ “What services does the insurance plan cover?”
✅ “Who do I contact if this service is denied?”
✅ “What needs to happen before my loved one can receive this service?”
✅ “What should we do if their condition changes?”
✅ “Who is responsible for the next step?”

CAREGIVER TIP:

Write down the answer, the person’s name and the next action.

âž»

YOU ARE PART OF THE TEAM

CASE MANAGER + CAREGIVER + PROVIDERS = BETTER COORDINATION

Your case manager doesn’t replace your voice.

YOU know your loved one’s day-to-day reality.

Speak up.
Ask questions.
Share changes.
Document concerns.
Follow up.

And when something isn’t working:

DON’T JUST SAY “NO ONE IS HELPING.”

Ask:

“WHO CAN HELP ME WITH THIS, AND WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?”

đŸ©ș THE CAREGIVER’S BREAKDOWN
You don’t have to know every answer.
You need to know who to ask—and what to ask.
