Cupping marks have color but they are not a diagnosis by themselves.
Think of a cupping session like listening to music: one note can be interesting, but it does not explain the whole song.
Cupping creates suction that can leave temporary circular marks. Their color may range from light pink to red, deep purple, or brownish as the body gradually clears the visible discoloration. Suction intensity, time under the cup, body area, skin tone, hydration, medications, and individual tissue response can all affect what you see.
In Chinese medicine, an acupuncturist does not “read” cup colors in isolation. We look at the whole pattern:
Your main concern and health history
Where you feel tension, pain, heaviness, numbness, or restriction
The quality of the tissue on palpation
Your tongue and pulse
Complexion, sleep, digestion, energy, stress, and other signs
Chinese-medicine describes diagnosis as integrated observation: complexion, tongue, pulse, and other findings must be considered together rather than treated as stand-alone proof of a condition.
What the colors can mean in plain language:
Light pink or red: Often a lighter, shorter-term skin response
Red to purple: Often reflects a stronger local response to suction and capillary leakage under the skin
Darker marks: May occur with stronger suction, longer treatment time, or a person’s individual tissue response not because “more toxins” were released
Minimal marking: Does not mean the session failed or that nothing happened
Cupping marks are temporary. They commonly fade over about one to two weeks.

✨ The takeaway: Cupping colors are one visual clue, like one instrument in an orchestra. Your acupuncturist listens to the entire arrangement before creating a treatment plan.
