Don’t confuse being needed with being available.

Because somewhere along the way, many of us learned that loving people meant showing up. No matter how tired we were. No matter what we were carrying. No matter how little we had left for ourselves.

And when we couldn’t, we felt guilty.

But here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.

What happens when the people we love get so accustomed to our availability that we stop considering our own capacity?

We can become incredibly good at meeting other people’s needs while slowly becoming strangers to our own.

And the interesting thing is, we can call that love for years without ever questioning what it’s costing us.

I’m not suggesting we stop showing up for people. Relationships require care, sacrifice, and sometimes inconvenience.

But I do think there’s a difference between making sacrifices out of love and repeatedly sacrificing the very things that allow us to love well.

Maybe one of the most loving things we can do is stop waiting until we’re depleted to decide that our needs matter, too.

Something to sit with this weekend. ❤️

At some point, you have to ask whether resentment is actually healing you or hurting you.

You can spend decades hating your parents for who they are.

And sometimes that anger makes sense.

But… where does it end?

They were shaped by their parents. Their parents were shaped by theirs. And somewhere along the line, pain just keeps getting handed down until somebody decides to look at it differently.

Acknowledging harm is one path to healing.

Understanding is another.

Sometimes you need both.

You don’t have to excuse what hurt you to understand where it came from.

Sometimes healing is less about deciding who was wrong and more about deciding what you no longer want to carry.

The hard part about becoming more yourself is realizing not everyone is going to like the version of you that shows up.

Some people will misunderstand you. Some will judge you. Some will be inspired by the exact same thing.

And eventually you have to decide whose opinion gets to shape your life.

Hopefully, yours.

There are moments in therapy where I want to jump out of my seat because a client just did the thing they swore they couldn’t do.

A few months into working together, they’ll casually say something like, “I told them I needed time to think,” or “I said I was getting off the phone.”

And I’m sitting there like… YES. THAT. 😂

Meanwhile, they’re still telling me they’re “bad at boundaries,” and I’m thinking, do you hear yourself?!

You’re pausing before saying yes.
You’re not explaining yourself five different ways anymore.
You’re ending the conversation when you’ve had enough.
You’re saying, “That doesn’t work for me.”
You’re actually listening when something feels off.

That is growth.

I think we miss so much of our own progress because we’re waiting for some huge, dramatic breakthrough to prove we’ve changed.

Meanwhile, the proof is showing up in how you speak, what you tolerate, what you walk away from, and how quickly you come back to yourself.

I LOVE pointing that out.

Because sometimes you really do need somebody to say, “Wait… do you realize you don’t do that anymore?”

I’m grateful I get to be that mirror for people sometimes.

Sometimes you don’t realize a relationship was built around your usefulness until you stop being useful.

The free advice.
The discount.
The favor.
The access.

And when you pull back, something changes.

That’s when you start to wonder if they valued you… or just what you could do for them.

Because being needed can feel a lot like being loved.

But if the relationship changes when the usefulness does, that wasn’t closeness. It was access.

If this made you think of someone, pay attention to that.

Imagine having a life with no regrets.

We talk about change like it’s this brave, beautiful walk toward something better.

But sometimes it’s ugly.

It’s checking your account and wondering how you’re going to make the next month work.
It’s waiting on test results and trying not to lose your mind.
It’s crying over someone you thought would still be in your life.
It’s realizing the plan you had may not be the life you actually get.

And when you’re in the middle of it, hearing “something good will come from this” can honestly feel like the last thing you want to hear.

Sometimes there isn’t a lesson yet.

Sometimes you’re just trying to stay present while grief, fear, anger, hope, and uncertainty are all sitting at the table at the same time.

Maybe living with fewer regrets isn’t about avoiding those seasons.

Maybe it’s about not abandoning yourself in the middle of them.

And then when it’s time to decide what happens next, somehow, choosing yourself gets a little easier.

Please tell me I’m not the only person who chooses cookbooks based on the pictures first 😊 Lauryn’s off to the side laughing, but I stand by my process.

I had a little realization this week.

One of the things I value most in my work is being able to sit across from someone and give them my full attention. No phone. No multitasking. No rushing. Just being there.

And it made me think about home.

Not from a place of guilt. I do a lot with and for my kids, and I know I show up for them in meaningful ways.

It just made me want to be even more intentional about creating that same kind of uninterrupted space with them too.

Now, I do have Gen Alpha children, so “put the electronics down” is sometimes received like I’ve announced a constitutional crisis 😂

Dinner at the table.
Phones away.
More conversation.
More lingering.
More moments where nobody is trying to get to the next thing.

I think good moms can still notice places where they want to deepen connection.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong.

Sometimes it just means you’re paying attention.

And lately, I’ve been wanting to return to some of those simpler rituals that make people feel seen, heard, and connected.

I’m practicing being where my feet are. ❤️
