Sometimes, “no” is more than just “no.”
From a behavioral perspective, when a child refuses something or refuses to do something, we look beyond the word itself and consider what the behavior may be communicating.
“No” might mean:
• This is too difficult.
• I need help.
• I need a break.
• I’m not sure what’s expected of me.
Rather than focusing only on stopping the refusal, understanding why the behavior is happening can help us determine what support or skill may be needed.
Our BCBAs often remind families: behavior has a function. Understanding that function helps us respond more effectively and teach skills that can support the child moving forward.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to recognize the skills, perspectives, and contributions people with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities.
This year's theme, "Celebrating Value and Talent," is a reminder that everyone deserves to be recognized for their strengths and given the support they need to succeed. That idea is at the heart of who we are at B Above Services. We believe every individual deserves to be truly seen, deeply supported, and understood, whether at home, at school, in the community, or at work. When people are seen for their strengths and supported in ways that fit their needs, they can grow, contribute, and thrive.
