Sometimes, the source of discomfort isn't where we feel it. A muscle on the outside of your hip called the gluteus medius helps keep your pelvis stable when you walk, run, climb stairs, or even get up from a chair.

When this muscle becomes overworked or irritated, it can sometimes cause pain around your hip, buttock, or even your lower back.

The good news? A little gentle movement may help! 🙌

In this week's video, we demonstrate a simple pigeon stretch that may help ease tension in the hip muscles. He also explains why understanding how your body moves is important, especially when discomfort keeps coming back.

Sometimes, feeling better starts with understanding where the pain may really be coming from!

Ever feel an ache deep in your hip or buttock that travels down the side or back of your leg? You might assume it's sciatica, but sometimes the muscles around your hip could be contributing to that discomfort.

One muscle that may be involved is the gluteus minimus. It's a small but important muscle that helps stabilize your hip when you walk, run, or stand on one leg. When it becomes irritated or overworked, it can sometimes create pain that feels surprisingly similar to sciatic pain.

In this week's video, we explain why this happens and demonstrate a simple way to gently work on the muscle at home using a lacrosse ball.

Remember, where you feel pain isn't always where the problem starts. Understanding what's contributing to it is an important part of finding lasting relief.

Struggling with lower back pain? It could be due to improper glute muscle activation. Try this one out and watch the pain disappear!

The glute bridge is a very common exercise you will see people doing. Unfortunately, a large portion of people do the exercise incorrectly. Keeping the heels close to the hips and rotating the pelvis into a posterior position allows for spinal neutrality and glute activation to drive the exercise correctly!

Make sure to hold a neutral plane from the knees to the shoulders and avoid hyperextension which can bring the lower back muscles into activation.

Try adding an exercise band around the lower thigh while holding the knees apart to activate the gluteus medius and get an even deeper contraction!

Stuffy ears. A tight jaw. That “everything feels plugged up” feeling. Sound familiar? 👂🍂

With congestion season here, this is a helpful demonstration to save: a gentle ear distraction technique you can do on yourself.

Watch as we walk you through the positioning and two directions of movement. The key? Go slowly, keep your touch light, and be kind to your ears -- no forceful tugging or chasing a “pop.”

Skip this technique if you have ear tubes or sensitive or irritated skin, and stop if it hurts. If you suspect an ear infection or have persistent pressure, get checked rather than relying on this technique.

Save this walkthrough for reference, and follow us for more practical self-care tips. 💙

🧘♀️ Don’t forget about your mid-back!

When your thoracic spine (mid-back) lacks mobility, other areas, like your neck and lower back, may have to compensate by moving more than they should. Over time, this can contribute to stiffness, discomfort, and pain.

One simple way to incorporate more thoracic mobility into your routine is Cat-Cows. This movement gently takes your spine through flexion and extension while encouraging movement throughout your back.

Try adding a few slow, controlled Cat-Cows to your daily routine and focus on moving through your entire spine rather than forcing the movement.

Still struggling with neck or lower back pain? Don’t just work around it! Schedule an appointment with one of our doctors so we can evaluate what may be contributing to your pain and determine other ways we can help you move and feel better.

The reach through exercise!

This stretch is great for those lacking mobility in their daily routine, or maybe spend too much time in a seated position

This is meant to open up your chest, shoulders and middle back to increase rotation in your middle and upper back!

In a quadruped position, reach an arm up as high towards the ceiling as comfortably allowed, then reach down and through your opposite arm and knee to rotate the opposite direction!

Try it out and let us know how great it feels!

"Wear and tear” doesn't automatically mean your body is breaking down.

Changes in your joints and spine are common as we age, and they don't always explain why you're experiencing pain.

Instead of letting an X-ray determine what you can or can't do, look at the bigger picture: strength, mobility, symptoms, and your ability to tolerate load.

Don't let an image define what your body is capable of.
