CALLIE AND ALL THE DOGS TRAINED TO SNIFF OUT CANCER 🐾

Not just Callie, who I featured in a previous reel, but a whole squad of amazing pups from . They are the first dogs in the world trained to detect colorectal cancer and Pseudomonas from a urine sample.

In the second part of the reel you can see Jasper and Callie finding two samples at lightning speed. The first contains Pseudomonas, the second is urine from a patient with stage I bowel cancer. Like Callie, Jasper loves his “job”, his trainers and his handlers. For him, it is all a wonderful and fun game.

Launched in 2024 with the Open University in the UK, this groundbreaking project enables a non-invasive, rapid and early test. In the case of Pseudomonas, it can detect a bacterium that causes severe infections, especially in immunocompromised patients, including cancer patients. And all of this is possible thanks to the most powerful nose in existence: a dog’s nose.

Please, never abandon or mistreat them. One day they could save your life.

HOW CAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SUPPORT HEAD AND NECK CANCER TREATMENT

The IAEA - International Atomic Energy Agency has launched a new two-year coordinated research project to explore how artificial intelligence can assist with — a crucial step in cancer treatment, in which a tumour and the surrounding tissues are outlined to guide the delivery of radiation therapy.

“Missteps during contouring can significantly impact treatment outcomes — be it from missing the tumours or irradiating normal tissues unnecessarily,” noted Tomoaki Tamaki, Head of Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy in the IAEA Division of Human Health.
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as deep learning-based algorithms can be valuable as previous studies have shown a reduction in contouring time and variation.

The study will be conducted in two phases. The first phase it will compare AI assistance with and without explainability to manual contouring. The second phase will investigate bias risks with and without explainability. An optional third phase will explore how to best visualize and present these AI explanations.
Participants in the project will be randomly assigned to groups for contouring tasks and will also take part in the IAEA led teaching sessions.
How to join this CRP:
This CRP is open to all Member States. Participating radiotherapy centres must meet the following eligibility criteria:
* Treat at least 20 head and neck cancer patients each year.
* Have 3D radiotherapy with computed tomography (CT)-based planning.
* Possess a robust internet connection for online workshops, case uploads and downloads.
* Have at least 3 to 4 oncologists who routinely perform head-and-neck cancer target contouring and who can participate.
Research institutions interested in joining the CRP must submit their Proposal for Research Contract or Agreement via email, no later than 30 August 2025, to the IAEA’s Research Contracts Administration Section

FRUCTOSE AND CANCER SPREAD

Sugar and cancer. A new study is making headlines. Let’s look at what it actually found.
For the first time, researchers have identified a specific mechanism by which excess free fructose can act as a signal that helps cancer cells detach and spread.
The study is from The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, published July 30, 2026 in Nature Aging.
The team studied high-grade serous ovarian cancer cells that survive platinum-based chemotherapy. These cells enter senescence, they stop dividing but stay biologically active and release a complex mix of signals called SASP.
Within that mix, they identified fructose.
Fructose lowers cholesterol production in neighboring tumor cells, a key step toward metastasis.
The same pro-metastatic signal was also triggered in preclinical models by high dietary fructose intake alone, at levels comparable to regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.
What does this mean for Head and Neck?

1. It is not about whole fruit.
Fructose inside whole fruit, with fiber and food matrix, is not the focus. The signal studied is excess free fructose, mainly from sugar-sweetened drinks and high-fructose corn syrup.

2. Prevention remains practical.
Reducing excess free fructose is already recommended for metabolic health and cancer prevention. That means limiting sugary drinks and ultra-processed products with added sweeteners, not cutting fruit.

WHY DOES CHEMOTHERAPY MAKE HAIR FALL OUT?

Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells to stop cancer.
Hair follicles, especially the matrix cells at the base of the follicle that build the hair shaft, divide every 24 to 72 hours during the growth phase, called anagen. Chemotherapy drugs cannot distinguish between malignant cells and healthy rapidly dividing cells.
The drugs damage DNA and block mitosis, so the matrix cells stop proliferating and undergo apoptosis. The hair shaft becomes weak, breaks at the scalp, and sheds. This is why hair loss typically starts 2 to 3 weeks after treatment begins.

HPV-related throat cancer has surged 225%

A landmark population-based study found that the incidence of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers increased by 225% – from 0.8 to 2.6 per 100,000 – between 1988 and 2004, while HPV-negative cancers declined by 50% due to reduced smoking.

Today, HPV is identified as the cause of up to 70% of all oropharyngeal cancers and has surpassed cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the US, according to the CDC.

This is no longer a smoker’s disease. It affects younger, non-smoking patients and is largely preventable.

Prevention saves lives: Get screened. Get vaccinated.

Older voices matter. Let’s make sure they are heard.

On the International Day of Older Persons, we honor the strength, wisdom, and resilience of older adults in our community.

Head and neck cancers disproportionately affect people over 60. Yet too often, symptoms like a persistent sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or a lump in the neck are dismissed as “just aging.”
They are not.

Early detection saves lives at every age. Every older person deserves timely diagnosis, age-appropriate treatment, and compassionate, multidisciplinary care that respects their quality of life, autonomy, and dignity.

Today, and every day, we stand with older patients, survivors, caregivers, and families.
Because age should never be a barrier to care.
