The post-bodywork walk.

One of my favorite parts of a bodywork session is taking that little walk afterward and seeing what changed.

It doesn't have to be a massive shift, sometimes it’s subtle. They may have a longer stride, freer shoulder, easier swing through the back, or track up better. Regardless of the change, those little moments are exactly why I love what I do.

But in all seriousness, our horses can't exactly tell us when something feels a little off which is why consistent care is so important.

And if horses could actually schedule their own appointments? I'd probably never be able to keep up with the demand. 😂

One question I get a lot is: “Does PEMF only work where the loop is placed?”

Not exactly!

PEMF is most concentrated within the loop, but the electromagnetic field is larger than where it is placed. That makes it a useful tool for addressing things that are deeper or difficult to access with hands-on work.

Curious whether PEMF could be a good fit for your horse?
If you're interested in adding PEMF to your horse's routine or want to learn more about how I use it, reach out to schedule a session!

Okay, okay… let’s be more specific.

Here are some things to watch for when deciding if your horse needs bodywork: changes in movement, reluctance, asymmetry, tension, changes in performance, difficulty with certain movements, etc.

So the answer to, does my horse need bodywork? From my experience as a bodyworker and horse owner... yes, yes they probably do. However, the schedule and frequency is going to be very different from horse to horse.

As a bodyworker, I feel obligated to tell you where you're allowed to pet your horse.....

There are the obvious favorites:

➡️ Withers: the universal horse scratch button.
➡️ Base of the neck: bonus points if they start leaning into you.
➡️ Shoulders: a good rub here is usually a crowd-pleaser.
➡️ Chest: because apparently this is where the good stuff lives.
➡️ Forehead/poll: for the horses who enjoy a good face rub.

And then there are the spots where you touch your horse and suddenly they look at you like:
“Excuse me. We are no longer friends.” 😂

Every horse is different, and their favorite place to be scratched isn't necessarily another horse's. Sometimes it just feels really, really good. So go find your horse's favorite spot!

Client Update: Benny 🐴

“I’ve noticed positive changes in Benny’s suppleness under saddle and his overall comfort since having Maggie work on him.

Maggie always takes the time to explain what she sees, feels, and is looking for while working on him. And honestly, I think Benny’s zen demeanor, quiet eye, and droopy lip during his sessions says a lot about how much he enjoys his bodywork!”

I love seeing the difference bodywork can make! Not just in how a horse moves, but in how they feel. 💙

I don't know about you but I am constantly reminded that if we're paying attention, horses have a funny way of teaching us things we didn't even know we needed to learn.

Patience.
Trust.
Being present.
Letting go.
Showing up when we don't want to.

I truly think horses are some of our greatest teachers. They don't just teach us how to ride - they teach us how to listen, how to be better, and how to slow down.
So I'm curious… what’s one thing your horse has taught you lately?

Your horse doesn't have to be “off” or showing an obvious problem for us to notice changes. Sometimes the smallest differences are the first clues and as an owner, you know your horse well enough to catch them first.

So the next time you pick up your brush, take a few extra minutes.
Feel your horse. Notice your horse. Listen to your horse.
Your observations might tell you more than you think.

A new saddle?
Different footing?
A harder training season?
More time off than usual?
A new hay source?
A change in routine?

Sometimes it’s not one big thing, it’s a bunch of little things that add up. Taking a step back and looking at the whole picture can help us connect the dots.
Our horses are always telling us something. We just have to pay attention.

What’s one thing that has changed for your horse recently?

Between lessons, training rides, clinics, and competitions, our horses are constantly being asked to perform during the summer.

And while consistent work is important… so is giving their bodies (and minds) a chance to reset.

Not every day needs to be a training day. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your horse is:
- A quiet trail ride
- A hand walk around the property
- Time outside in turnout
- A stretch session
- A well-earned day off

Movement doesn’t always have to mean “work.” Allowing horses to move freely, relax, and just be horses plays an important role in keeping them feeling good.

What’s your horse’s favorite “easy day” activity?
