Myth: Radiation therapy is one-size-fits-all.

Fact: Radiation treatment plans are personalized based on the type and location of the cancer, the patient's health, and the recommendations of their care team. Options can include several advanced technologies, and proton therapy may be one of them for select patients.

Also a friendly reminder: if you're due for a mammogram, this is a great week to schedule one. Talk with your doctor about the screening schedule that's right for you. 🩷

Happy Pediatric Nurses Week! πŸ’›

Our pediatric nurses are experts at the clinical side of care, but they're also the ones who learn a child's favorite stuffed animal, celebrate every small win, and help parents breathe a little easier.

To our pediatric nursing team: thank you for making our center a place where kids feel safe and families feel supported. We're so grateful for you.

September is Urology Awareness Month. Prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancers are all treatable, and catching them early makes a difference. For some of these cancers, proton therapy is one of several radiation options your care team may consider. If you have questions, your existing care team can discuss whether it fits into your complete treatment plan.

Ever wonder how proton therapy actually works? Unlike conventional radiation, proton beams can be controlled to release most of their energy directly at the tumor and then stop, rather than continuing on through the body. That's the basic idea behind what's called the Bragg peak. It's one of the reasons proton therapy can be a precise option for certain cancers, prostate cancer included.

At 11, Sophia Lopez was diagnosed with craniopharyngioma, a rare brain tumor near her optic nerves. Her care team at the Texas Center for Proton Therapy used a precise treatment approach to protect the healthy tissue around it.

Sophia completed 30 sessions over six weeks. "I would say proton therapy saved my daughter's life because it gave us hope," said her mom, Jessica.

Today, Sophia is monitored with routine MRIs and has a message for other kids facing treatment: don't be afraid. πŸ’› Watch her full story here: https://www.texasoncology.com/patient-voices/sophia-lopez
