The glue that holds it all together. 💙🐾

Today the ACVNU is celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week, by recognizing the Cornell Extracorporeal Therapies and Blood Purification Unit technicians, Patricia Smith, LVT, VTS (ECC), and Alisha Farham, LVT, Hemodialysis Academy graduate.

Dr. Jethro Forbes, ACVNU Legacy Candidate, The Extracorporeal Hour host, Hemodialysis Academy faculty member, and all-around great guy—shares this tribute to them:
“The countless hours of dedication, loving patient care, unit support, friendship, and overtime that Patricia and Alisha put into their work, make all the amazing things we do in the Cornell Extracorporeal Therapies and Blood Purification Unit possible. I can’t imagine doing what we do with anyone else and they make me better both personally and professionally.”

Patricia and Alisha, thank you for the expertise you bring, the comfort you provide, and the heart you put into every patient and every treatment. Your impact reaches far beyond your unit.

What an incredible collaboration between the Hobbs laboratory team at Texas Longhorns veterinary medicine, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the ACVNU to highlight the amazing life saving and life changing work with extracoproeal therapies in large animal species!!!

Did you know extracorporeal therapies aren’t just for small animals?

For the first time ever at Renal Week, we’re expanding the conversation to include large animals and farm species!

Join Kallie Hobbs, DVM, PhD, DACVIM-LAIM, at ACVNU-IRIS Renal Week 2027 for a fascinating look at the use of dialysis and hemoperfusion in the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI) in large animals and farm species—bringing extracorporeal therapies to a whole new scale.

From Great Danes and Singapura to Shire horses and Boer goats, kidney care knows no size!

🔬 What do you do when a 2-day-old foal with neonatal sepsis isn't responding to standard treatment? At Cornell Equine, the answer was to try something that had never been done before in a septic neonatal foal.

A new case report recently published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine describes the first use of polymer-based extracorporeal hemoperfusion (HP) in a septic neonatal foal. A 2-day-old Miniature Horse filly presented in critical condition at Cornell Equine Hospital. When conventional therapy failed to bring improvement within 24 hours, the team implemented hemoperfusion using the VetResQ device to remove inflammatory cytokines and other harmful compounds from the blood. The treatment was well tolerated and was associated with improved physical examination findings and reduced cytokine concentrations - offering important proof-of-concept even in the face of a heartbreaking outcome.

This case is part of a broader program at Cornell, where a team led by Dr. Barbara Delvescovo and Dr. Jethro Forbes in collaboration with Dr. Kallie Hobbs at Texas A&M University is pioneering the clinical and research application of hemoperfusion in large animal medicine. From sepsis and endotoxemia to selected toxicities, the goal is to bring advanced blood purification therapies to equine patients who need them most.

Congratulations to the full team on this publication: Hanna Sfraga, Jethro Forbes, Kallie Hobbs, Marta Cercone, Elizabeth Williams Louie, Jamie Lemus, Gillian Perkins, and Barbara Delvescovo. 🌟

Amazing work from this group of lifesavers!! Thanks for helping us practice the best approach to Hemoperfusion!

It's Spotlight Saturday! ✨

Learn how over the past 5 years, Dr. Butty and the extracorporeal therapy team at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals have successfully treated hundreds of cases of dogs and cats with toxicities with a hemoperfusion device that uses carbon instead of charcoal to selectively extract toxins from the blood: jav.ma/ect
