Our CEO & President, Gregory Johnson, continues to bring his voice and perspective to important conversations shaping the nonprofit sector. In a Forbes Nonprofit Council feature, Gregory shares why meaningful appreciation starts with making it personal.

“When people feel seen, valued, and connected to their impact, that sense of gratitude can extend far beyond a single moment.”

We’re nearing giving season, which can be a busy time for nonprofits and philanthropies. It’s important to appreciate your staff and the value they bring.

Mississippi has the lowest median household income in the nation at $59,127—nearly $22,500 below the national median of $81,604 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024).

Our goal: The Foundation for the Mid South has set a target to reduce unemployment rates across the region by 5% by strengthening workforce development.

That means funding vocational training aligned with regional job markets, supporting entrepreneurship education and small business incubators, and building apprenticeship pipelines with local employers.

Economic mobility means having the resources to meet today’s needs, and the opportunity to build beyond them.

That’s why the Foundation for the Mid South invests in vocational training aligned with regional job markets, entrepreneurship education, and partnerships that connect people to meaningful career opportunities. These investments help create pathways to financial stability, business ownership, and greater possibilities for families across our region.

September is National Workforce Development Month, but our commitment extends year-round: helping more people access the opportunities they need to shape their futures.

The numbers tell us how widespread gun violence is across the Mid South. But they don’t tell us what people carry long after the headlines fade.

In our latest blog, What They Carry: Stories of Loss, Lived Experience, and Hope Across the Mid South, we center the voices of people whose experiences with violence, grief, trauma, and community action offer an important reminder: the people closest to the challenges are often closest to the solutions.

Their stories are helping shape how we think about safer communities, access to mental health support, and community-driven solutions across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Recently, we kicked off the Delta Story Project with our 2026 Cultural Ambassadors—an inspiring group committed to sharing the powerful stories, experiences, and perspectives of Jackson and the Mississippi Delta.

Through the Delta Story Project, the Foundation of the Mid South is exploring the diverse perspectives that reflect the richness and complexity of these communities. Over the next six months, each ambassador will develop a public-facing project designed to advance truth-telling, racial healing, and narrative change across Mississippi.

On National Day of Racial Healing, January 19, their work will be celebrated and spotlighted during a special showcase featuring stories from across the state.
