One of my favorite things about creating Powder Hour is compiling exercises that build strength and stability in specific muscles. So that, we can put together movement patterns that mimics skiing movements.

If you can have your core engaged and able to resist rotation while moving your legs underneath you, then making a ski turn should feel easier, more stable and stronger.

This exercise is introduced several weeks into the program because we have had to build the strength required to do it well.

This is why, if you do ski specific strength, aka Powder Hour, you will ski better and it will feel different in a fantastic way :)

This is an ode to our White Mountains. I spent the night recently at Carter Notch Hut and was so touched by the naturalist talk. The croo, Gabriella, spoke so eloquently and powerfully about the magic of the Whites while referencing the authors that captured it’s magic decades ago. It stuck with me that she sought out this place through the arts and literature. Different than what we often hear.

I was at the Hut because I was going to try to do a Hut Traverse. I kind of knew deep down that I didn’t have the drive in me to push but wanted to go through the motions anyway.

I decided to bail when running across the Northern Presidentials and sat down on a rock near Clay looking to the West and across the range. I had been thinking about the magic all morning and got really emotional. A release of energy, stress and joy.

These mountains make me emotional - in a way that place has never done that. And I know I’m not alone. It keeps me coming back and pushing myself.

I was so content at that moment.

It’s been almost a week and I can’t stop thinking about it.

We all need to have a why to get out the door to move our bodies. I’m inspired by everyone I work with and friends. Some are just discovering their why to get out the door to walk, hike, run in these mountains and some have been on that journey for awhile. 🙏💫❤️

This is a very nuanced thing and is different with everyone. So don’t take this as a green light to ignore all pain. I want ppl to start thinking about what they are feeling and not being afraid of it. And start to learn about their bodies and how they respond to new load.

If you have questions about managing symptoms, how to ramp up to bigger objectives or if you find yourself in this conundrum, then I am happy to help. We can set up an appointment or call.

Fall is a great time to hike and trail run. The weather cools down and the days start to shorten.

Hiking or trail running up AND down are great ways to load the legs and specifically the quads for ski season prep.

And don’t forget Powder Hour!!

Moving our bodies in the outdoors is therapy for so many. Finding a spot to listen to the wind or watch clouds fly by. It’s a privilege to be able to access them and a valuable resource.

From a health and wellness perspective, in order to keep returning to the outdoors we need to be physically able to do it. I hear from and see so many patients who are working hard to learn and overcome pain or weakness to keep stepping outside here in our beautiful MWV and White Mtns.

Or others working to maintain their physical health - usually in response from some kind of injury and are motivated to stay ahead of the game.

I believe it’s worth it to learn why you may get hurt or how to manage your favorite activity’s volume so you don’t get sidelined. And miss out on that view that fills your cup or gets you out of bed.

Strength testing is a great way to get objective measures and to find asymmetries between each leg. When someone is already strong, it can be hard to spot these differences until you get real numbers.

Technology has made this easier and more flexible. Here I am testing a patient post op so we can see how well we have strengthened the surgical leg versus the non-surgical leg. It gives us great markers for the rehab process as a patient is returning to different activities.
