One genetic discovery helped protect an entire family.

When UMMC patient Rhonda Cooley underwent genetic testing, the results revealed an inherited mutation that led to the discovery of thyroid cancer in multiple family members.

Dr. Wade Christopher and UMMC’s cancer care team helped make a difference for Rhonda and her family.

Barbara Herring, who leads our Breast Cancer Survivorship Clinic, helps patients navigate life after treatment through ongoing monitoring, surveillance and support.

Her message to survivors? Every woman’s experience, recovery and emotional well-being are unique. Every survivorship journey deserves individualized care.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Wade Christopher, surgical oncologist, and Dr. Barbara Craft, medical oncologist, share what they wish more people knew about breast cancer.

The biggest takeaway? Breast cancer is very treatable, especially when caught early. Today’s treatments are also more targeted and personalized, often with fewer side effects.

Early detection matters. Talk with your doctor about breast cancer screening and what’s right for you. 💗

We had a great time gathering in Washington, D.C. during ACS Clinical Congress!

It was so nice to bring together alumni, faculty, colleagues and friends of UMMC Surgery for a night of good conversation and catching up. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and made the evening such a great one!
