I am a big fan of Alcon's Vivity IOL. The Vivity lens offers a seamless span of vision for both distant and intermediate activities, along with efficient near vision. The Vivity lens gives you the vision of a 45-year-old. Patients are able to pass a driver’s test without glasses as well as do sports, housework, crafts, see the computer and read up to 20 inches. Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) provide patients an opportunity to lessen their reliance on glasses or contact lenses. These lenses are implanted inside the eye to address both near and distant vision, offering a comprehensive vision correction solution. In the past, cataract surgery primarily focused on improving distance vision for activities like driving or watching TV. However, patients often needed additional support, such as bifocals or reading glasses, to tackle presbyopia (loss of near vision focus) for tasks like reading a restaurant menu or working on a computer. Paul H. Ernest, M.D. founded Specialty Eye Institute in 1978 and is now an eminent ophthalmologist, but his educational foundation started out very differently. In his undergraduate days at Northwestern University, Dr. Paul H. Ernest was a dedicated engineering major for three years and even took an engineering internship with Ford Motor Company before the rewarding field of medicine beckoned.

After he witnessed his grandmother’s successful corneal transplant surgery, he focused his education on ophthalmology. Both his doctorate and his residency were completed at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In addition, Dr. Paul H. Ernest also served a fellowship at Wayne State University’s Kresge Eye Institute, specializing in cornea and anterior segment surgery. Dr. Ernest’s commitment to the people of Michigan is evident to this day.

Solving patients’ problems in a focused, detail-oriented way is something that Dr. Ernest prides himself on. He has retained the meticulousness of his engineering training and applied it to his current team-based approach to his work.
