January recognizes Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille literacy system used by many with visual impairments. In 1829, at the age of 15, he developed a system of raised dots for those to navigate life and readings through their own system of literacy after living partially blind. Braille made the writing system after stumbling upon the “Night-Writing” system, created by Charles Barbier in the 1800's to help soldiers communicate at night without attracting attention; Braille modified it to create a system of literacy for the blind.

Ever searched for a piece of assistive technology to solve an everyday problem only to find it doesn’t exist, or the price tag was outrageous? Perhaps you’ve even purchased a piece of assistive technology in the past and thought, “why didn’t I think of that?” or “I could have made this so much better.” Now you can.

Makers Making Change, a Canadian nonprofit, connects people with disabilities to volunteer makers, who collaborate to build low-cost alternatives to commercially available assistive technology.

Connecting end-users with engineers to bring assistive-tech ideas to life.

"The ADA requires that public accommodations maintain accessible features, including during inclement weather. Accessible parking spaces, access aisles, curb ramps and accessible routes must be clear of obstacles, including snow. A business should ensure that shoveled snow is not dumped into any of the accessible features mentioned above. An accessible parking space or aisle is NEVER the appropriate place to store that inconvenient snow! "

Inclement weather is an inconvenience for many, but life-altering for others.

Holidays can be stressful for people and here are four methods to address those moments.
1. Attention Centering Technique's - aim to neutralize anxiety, it can often help to use techniques designed to focus attention beyond anxious thoughts.
2. Expressive creative strategies - To channel anxious thoughts or feelings in more productive ways, we might identify specific outlets to express creativity, such as working on a project, drawing, and athletics.

"State and local jurisdictions are desperately looking for new ways to speed up affordable housing development as the supply of homes falls short of demand nearly everywhere in the U.S. There are potential solutions hiding in plain sight: repurposing the vacant and underutilized strip malls that are spread across the country in urban and suburban areas alike." Have the conversation with your local and state reps.

Op-ed: If just the best-suited 10% of America’s strip malls were redeveloped, we could build 700,000 new affordable homes nationwide. Here’s what it would take.

LOTS of lumber is needed when we build ramps for a person with a disability so they can safely remain in their home and within their community. We need your help raising funds for all that lumber and hopefully even provide more ramps each year.

There are some great photos from The Inclusion Event at the beginning of November taken by our friends at JTV . We thank all of those who shared their evening with us. Especially the crew from University of Michigan Adaptive Sports and Fitness that shared their adaptive sport equipment and allowed attendees to experience the games for themselves.

Goalball is a Paralympic sport for people with visual impairment. All players are completely blindfolded and roll a ball with bells inside it trying to get it past the opposing teams and sore a goal.
