🫙 Iron Supplement Not Working? 👇

If your child's iron levels aren't budging 📉 even though you're giving a supplement every day 💊, it might not be about missed doses at all.

🔬 Your body has a natural "gatekeeper" hormone called hepcidin 🧬 that controls how much iron gets absorbed each day 🩸. Give iron too often, and that gatekeeper can slow absorption down instead of helping it along 😮‍💨🚧

📌 Iron more than once a day may not work as the first dose triggers hepcidin 💊
📌 Alternate-day dosing 🔄 can sometimes work better than daily dosing
📌 Lower doses ⚖️ may actually absorb more efficiently than higher ones

🧠 This research came out well after some pediatricians finished training 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️, and that's exactly why we keep learning 📚✨.
The science on iron absorption keeps evolving 🔬➡️🧬, so we do too 🌱.

💬 Has your child's iron supplement ever seemed like it just wasn't working?

💉 Wait, Vitamin K Isn't a Vaccine? 🤔

New parents ask us about this ALL the time — so let's clear up the confusion.

➡️ The vitamin K shot given at birth is NOT a vaccine.
➡️ It's a vitamin, given as a shot instead of by mouth
➡️ The injection releases a small amount of Vitamin K from the muscle over a period of a few months

😟 Worried about the "black box warning" you read online?
Totally different scenario — high-dose vitamin K given rapidly through an IV.
The tiny muscle dose given to babies IS NOT the same thing at all.

📌 The shot: 99% protective against Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB)
Devastating when it happens!
📌 Oral drops: An option most pediatricians don't know about -- 90% protective
Must be given weekly for 12 weeks

Knowing the real facts (not internet rumblings from NON-EXPERTS) is the game changer for your baby 👶💙

💬 Had you heard the "it's not a vaccine" fact before? Did you or will you give your baby Vitamin K? Comment below.

It doesn’t matter how good the diet, sleep, or treatment plan is—if the daily routines aren't solid, everything falls apart.

As an integrative pediatrician, I often remind parents (and fellow doctors!) that ADHD usually has a genetic component. That means the parent responsible for building the home structure might be navigating the exact same focus struggles as the child.

The fix? Simple, repeatable routines that remove the brainpower needed to transition from task to task—like a quick visual checklist on the fridge or an automatic habit like pulling up the sheets right when you get out of bed.

What is the routine or hack that keeps your household running smoothly? Drop it in the comments below! 👇

If you want more practical ways to guide your child with ADHD through this school year, comment ROUTINE and we’ll send details directly to your inbox. 💬

💉 Vaccine Thought of the Day

We hear this request a lot in the office: "Can we do Measles, Mumps, and Rubella as 3 separate shots instead of the combo MMR?"

Early in practice, that's exactly what I did. 20-25 yrs ago it was readily available!

➡️ But here's the thing I didn't realize at first: splitting the MMR into 3 separate shots means giving THREE TIMES the preservatives compared to the combined vaccine.

📌 MMR combo = 1 shot, 1 vial of preservatives, full protection
📌 Split MMR = 3 shots, 3x the preservatives, same exact protection

When the single M, M and R vials went away and we had to switch to the combo MMR, I saw NO increase in side effects or reactions.
And we're talking 1000's and 1000's on both sides of the coin.

Just my thought. What do you think?

Swollen Glands = Your Child’s Surveillance Team at Work

We have glands called lymph nodes that are constantly surveying the landscape to make sure that we stay healthy.

They act like small filters all over the body to fight off germs. In kids, swollen neck nodes are an extremely common response to everyday colds, coughs, and ear infections - especially the ones in our neck.

Once the infection resolves, glands will get smaller and smaller over a period of a few days to a few weeks. This should happen in all healthy adults. Persistent lymph node swelling in adults should always be examined by a doctor.

In children, swollen glands are LESS of a cause for concern because their bodies are being exposed to new germs and triggers to the immune system on a daily basis.

Children's lymph nodes can stay enlarged for weeks or even months. The key factor being a child that is HEALTHY—eating, sleeping, acting and playing normally without fever, rashes or pain—then this is usually just a sign of a healthy, hard-working immune system!

When to worry and have your child examined:
➡️ Nodes that continuously grow larger
➡️ Lymph nodes with overlying redness that are hard and tender
➡️ Nodes accompanied by persistent or recurring fevers
➡️ Swollen lymph nodes paired with fever, rashes, joint pain, or low energy
➡️ Trust your intuition as a parent if something just DOESN"T seem right to you!

🚽 It's Probably Not a UTI

Your child says "it hurts to p*e" and the first thing every parent thinks is UTI.

Here's the secret that'll save you a lot of worry: it's almost always NOT a UTI.

➡️ It's p**p pressure. In girls, that pressure extends right through the bladder area. The nerves run through there too, which is why even boys can say "it hurts to p*e" from the same cause.

📌 Check the p**p before you panic:
❌ Firm, having to strain, looks like Play-Doh? Not what we want.
✅ Soft, easy to pass, looks like oatmeal that's been sitting out a bit? That's the goal.

Get the p**p soft and regular, and that "pain with p*eing" usually disappears right along with it.

Real UTI pain with p*eing gets extreme within 24 hrs, usually to the point the child who is verbal is very scared to urinate or drink liquids.
Babies with UTI's are more difficult to diagnose and need to be seen asap.
Be sure to check with your pediatrician ASAP if you are concerned!

💬 Has your child ever complained about pain with p*eing? Comment below — we love helping you figure out what's really going on.

"Ferritin face" is having a moment online — but what does it actually mean?
😴 How Low Iron MIGHT Look ~ 🩸

➡️ Ferritin is the storage form of iron in the body 🧬.
When levels run low, it can start to show up as:

📌 Pale skin 😐
📌 Dull hair 💇‍♀️
📌 Fatigue 😴
📌 Trouble falling or staying asleep 🌙
📌 Restless legs

Sound familiar? May be worth running a CBC and ferritin level 🩸 as together they give the clearest picture of iron status.

💬 Noticed any of these signs in your child (or yourself)? Talk to your doctor about it.👇
