"After two decades in advertising and design in St. Louis, I found my way to the art therapy program at Southern Illinois University. My final practicum was at Barnes Jewish Hospital, working with patients in palliative care, antepartum and substance use treatment. I landed at a substance use treatment clinic in St. Albans when I moved to Vermont three years ago, which unexpectedly closed last year. During the time between jobs, I invested in my letterpress studio, with future plans to offer workshops to the community and art therapy retreats. The stars aligned through common connections and I learned about Johnson Health. They needed a mental health and substance use counselor and their mission aligns so closely with my own. I am meeting people in the Johnson community and am grateful and excited to be part of the expansion of services in Johnson and Burlington." Kirsten O'Loughlin, MA, LADC Candidate

Scuba diver. Sock monkey artist. Printmaker. Yoga instructor. Mental health provider. Kirsten is a Renaissance Woman, leaning into passions and building a career focused on finding alignment with other people. Kirsten is excited to be back in a clinical setting full time, helping provide whole-person care for individuals in need of substance use treatment, mental health services and overall wellness care.

“As I begin my career as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I am genuinely grateful and humbled to do so at the Johnson Health Center. I grew up in Lamoille County here in Vermont, so have a deep connection with this community and our state. My goal is to build meaningful and trusting relationships with patients, provide compassionate and evidence-based care, reduce barriers to treatment and help expand access to services for individuals who have historically been underserved or faced stigma. Most importantly, I hope every person I care for feels heard, respected and supported—wherever they may be in their journey.” Brooke Billado, FNP

For Brooke, her work with the Johnson Health Center is deeply personal. She is leveraging her previous experience as a registered nurse, where she worked in inpatient and outpatient settings focused on substance use treatment, as well as hospice and long-term care. While these may seem like very different clinical areas, for Brooke they share some fundamental truths: every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, empathy and without judgement; patients deserve to have their voice drive their care plan; and we need to meet everyone where they are, rather than expecting patients to adapt to us. While she’s just beginning her career as a nurse practitioner, Brooke has a deep well of experience and a philosophy totally aligned with the Johnson Health Center team.

“Many of the patients I serve have a deep distrust of the traditional health care system built upon a lifetime of experience and disappointment. Trauma-informed care has become a bit of a buzz word, but it’s still so important: the whole person deserves to be treated when they’re in front of a health care provider, without judgement or preconceptions. As a newly-graduated Nurse Practitioner, I’m so excited to have the opportunity to work at the Johnson Health Center. I get to treat the whole person, in the way I would want to be treated, from substance use disorder care to reproductive health screenings to blood pressure management.”

Allison Leavey came to Vermont for her undergraduate degree, left for work and graduate school and has returned to work alongside the Johnson Health Center team serving Burlington and Johson, VT. After a lot of hard work, she’s “re-learning” how to be human, spending time with her dog, her friends and the outdoors. At the end of the day, Allison goes through her patient list and asks herself this simple question: “did they get what they needed today?” At the Johnson Health Center, she’s proud to give a resounding “yes!”

August 31st marks International Overdose Awareness Day, a day dedicated to remembering those we have lost and supporting those still struggling. This year marks 25 years of raising awareness, and the need for compassion and action remains as vital as ever.

Please join us in honoring the lives of those we have lost. We invite you to share a name, a memory, or an encouraging message in the comments below as we stand together in remembrance, today and every day.

25 years on. Still Needed.

“I live in Johnson, am raising my kid in Johnson, and get to see firsthand the impact of the work we do in the community – in the faces I recognize out and about, in the supportive comments I get about how our work is changing lives. I wonder what would be different for me and my late husband today if we had the opportunity to get care from an organization like the Johnson Health Center when we were struggling with addiction. It just reinforces my commitment to do what I can to provide a safe, trustworthy environment for care for my neighbors and fellow community members.”

If you ask Caroline and Geoff Butler what Crystal Bolio’s job description says, they’ll respond “ensure all success on all initiatives.” It’s quite an expectation, but Crystal is definitely up for it! The mom of three with one kid still at home, Crystal has spent the last three years working with the Butlers and the rest of the Johnson Health Center team, ensuring high quality, accessible care in Johnson and now in the Burlington clinic. Crystal is instrumental in the future of care at both locations, ensuring operations are operating smoothly and the team can achieve as much success as they can muster.

“When I transitioned from practicing Internal Medicine in a hospital to prescribing medication assisted treatment, first at Community Health Centers in Burlington and now at the Johnson Health Center, I went from treating patients older than I was to treating people my grandchildren’s age. My goal is to make sure patients don’t feel intimidated or out of place when they’re getting care.” Dr. Beach Conger

Dr. Conger moved to Burlington after a long career as an Internal Medicine specialist with Mount Ascutney Hospital in southeastern Vermont. He worked with Community Health Centers in Burlington, starting the next phase of his career treating patients with opioid use disorder. He thought he was retiring from Community Health Centers several years ago when he read a story about the opening of the Johnson Health Center’s Burlington clinic. He knocked on the door one day and someone he had previously treated at the Community Health Centers recognized him and asked if he was working with the Johnson Health Center. He replied “Well, I guess I am now!” October will mark his two-year anniversary providing medication assisted treatment – along with all of the other primary care services his patients need – at the Bank Street clinic.

“I’ve known Caroline and Geoff Butler for a long time and have so much respect for the work they’re doing. Helping them to add human resources and employee processes hasn’t been the most exciting thing happening at the Johnson Health Center, but I’m totally committed to doing what I can do behind the scenes to ensure they’re able to do their life changing, life transforming work.”

Abbie Lever is a longtime Montpelier resident and has found ways to support the work of the Johnson Health Center by building human resources policies and procedures. Using her expertise and experiences built over a career with the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, she has helped the Johnson Health Center team build their first employee handbook, develop and standardize new employee onboarding and help think through all the systems needed to support the work – and growth – happening in the clinics. The Johnson Health Center team knows the work Abbie describes as “boring” is critical to building a solid foundation for the highest quality patient care.

“It feels like fate that brought me to the Johnson Health Center – and to Caroline and Geoff Butler. My dad wasn’t part of my life growing up and I was raised by my single mom who was dealing with addiction and health issues. We spent time without a home, without food, without anything, really. Now I’ve graduated from computer engineering school, have a wife and two small children, and I have my connection to the JHC to thank for all of it. The authentic, human connections I’m able to build with JHC patients is so rewarding – it motivates me to do whatever I can to help ensure they get the care they need, when they need it.”

The friendly voice on the other end of the line at the Johnson Health Center is often Alfonso Branzuela, who leads office operations all the way from the Philippines. He may be 12 hours ahead of Burlington or Johnson, VT, but that doesn’t faze Alfonso. He is eager to help Johnson Health Center patients navigate their care, and often their lives. Over the phone, Alfonso has developed deep and lasting relationships with his colleagues, the Butlers and patients.
